Benefits of sunglasses layoners

Why sunglasses are necessary?

There are two main ways through which sunglasses can protect your eyes. Firstly they protect against damaging rays coming from the sun by filtering the light. Secondly, they reduce the glare and filter 99% of UV light out 100%. They need to comfortable and protective for the eyes without any distortion.

How do eyes can get damaged by the sun?

There are three main types of rays present in the sunlight which come towards us. Their detail is given below:

Visible: the portion of the light which we can see with the naked eye

Infrared: Its invisible part but we can feel it as heat

Ultraviolet: It is also called as UV light. It is also invisible and called as sunburn rays. UV radiation is further divided into two main types. UV-A rays and UV-B rays. Our eyes can easily get damaged by these rays. That damage may be momentary, or long-lasting depends upon the ratio and intensity of exposure. If someone has constant exposure to bright sunlight, its cornea gets damaged. The cornea is the outermost part of the eye through which light is allowed to the excess retina; retina is the innermost part of the eye that has the job of sending images to the brain so that we can see what we are looking at.

What mechanism sunglasses follow to protect our eyes from the damaging UV radiation?

Every eyewear, either it’s prescribed or not, belongs to whichever group such as lens implants, contact lens, glasses should be able to absorb both UV-A and UV-B. Protection from UV light is not much expensive and process, and it also doesn’t get in the way of clear vision. Many shops of sunglasses claim that their product can block 99-100% of both types of UV rays, and they also exclude squinting and glare completely. Still, one should be aware of labels on the product which don’t specify that precisely what amount of UV light can be blocked with the respective product.

Who has a high risk of getting affected by UV rays?

Any person who spends most of the time in the sun has more risk of damage, like workers, athletes, and any other individual who spends long hours in the direct sun have a high health risk. People who have surgery of cataracts or having any kind of retinal issues also highly susceptible to this damage. Many people become more sensitive to UV light due to certain medical pills like sulfa drugs, birth control pills, tetracycline, tranquilizers, and diuretics because they enhance the sensitivity of the eye to light.

Kinds of lenses:

Main five types of lenses were discussed till now: \

  • Clip-on lenses
  • Gradient lenses
  • Mirrored lenses
  • Photochromatic lenses
  • Polarized lenses

Clip-on lenses:

These types have to be used after the prescription and on top of eyeglasses. Although they are easy to use, they may not be able to cover the lens entirely. They can cause reflections if used with the lens surface of the ordinary glasses. Prescription lenses may get scratched or fall off due to them.

Gradient lenses:

Sunglasses can be of double gradient density (these are lighter in the center and dark at top and bottom) or gradient density (these are dark on the top and tapers to the light at the bottom. They become more effective when sunlight is coming from overhead or gets reflected in eyes form the underside.

Mirrored lenses:

In this type coating of the metallic thin film is done on glasses, which gives an impression like a mirror and reflects the light rays, ultimately reduces further the amount of light that can reach the eye.

Photochromatic lenses:

These types of glasses can be changed according to the intensity of light. The main feature of them is that they darken the bright sun and lighten the dim light making it easy for you to see correctly in a condition in which light is not uniform. The only problem is that they may not be able to adapt to new light conditions as quickly as you need.

Polarizing lenses:

Due to their glare and bounce- ups reducing ability which comes from flat surfaces, they are quite handy during fishing, boating driving and any other activity where you face the glare of water or ground surface.

Conclusion:

It is a sage decision to wear sunglasses while going out or whenever you are in exposure to direct sun. It is useless to act like daredevil thinking that nothing will happen to my eyes and repenting after something severe damage is done due to your irrational thinking.
