Hayden Flour Mill is the oldest standing concrete reinforced building in Tempe. It was built in the year 1918 by Trumbell Hayden family. The building operated as a flour mill until its closure in 1998. it was named from the family who built it and the purpose of the building. The building was build using reinforced concrete to curb instances of fire that attacked previously built millers building. There had been two incidences of fire attacking flour miller building leaving losses which made Hayden family figure out about the best materials to use to curb the fire incidences. The building today serves as a historic building and reminds the people of when Tempe town was still underdeveloped and when farming was practiced as a primary activity. Hayden Flour Mill is iconic and attracts a lot of visitors, even today. This essay major on the history of Hayden Flour Mill, its characteristics, reasons why it was built, and why it has attracted tourists since then to today.

Many compromising stories have been written about the Hayden Flour Mill building in Tempe. The architecture traces history way back in 1800 years (“Historic Hayden Flour Mill Coming Back To Life”) when there were little developments in the construction area. It was built in 1918, and till today it the structure still stands strong. The currently standing mill is the third to be built on that site (www.nerdmecca.com). A legendary business person by the name Charles T. Hayden was the first one to establish this building in 1874, which was later consumed by fire. According to history Charles Hayden was on his way to North when he was stopped by dangerous flowing waters of the Arizona Salt River (“New Brand: Hayden Flour Mills”). As he waited for the waters to settle, Charles stood on top of Tempe Butte and admired the fertile grounds when he sported a cite suitable for a flour mill (“New Brand: Hayden Flour Mills”). At the incidence of the fire, Charles Hayden was already dead and his son Carl C. Hayden and grandson Hayden C. Hayden, Charles’ decision to replace the building with materials which are fire resistance. They then came up with the idea of using reinforced concrete, which is much resistant to fire. The building attracted the growth of Tempe town, and Mill Avenue was named after it. It was one of the famous story buildings of its time, which attracted attention from different builders. The construction was not sufficiently advanced compared to today, although it was iconic and unique.

The mill used water until 1928 when it started using electricity. The building had no grain silos previously, and they were added 1951 (Paul, 2018). Fire incidence, which occurred later in 2002, left the structure intact since much of the materials used in the building were concrete which is resistant to fire (Hayden Flour Mill | Downtown Tempe, AZ, n.d.). Some people think of tarring the building apart, but it is protected under the National register of historic place (An abridged history of Mill Avenue: The Hayden Flour Mill, n.d.).History is essential to remind people the far they have come from, and the Hayden Flour Mill structure is a historical structure in construction history. With the Hayden Flour Mill structure, the people of Tempe can learn different past things about how the town developed due to the functions of this structure. They can learn the main farming activities that were practiced during those ancient times.

The purpose and the importance of Hayden Flour Mill building can be understood from its name. The main purpose was to mill and produce floor. During those times, very few areas in the world were developed in terms of industrialization. Tempe was one of the underdeveloped places in Arizona. Milling industry was not available and thus the people used to export the materials and import the already processed products. Hayden Flour Mill building came to rescue the people of Tempe and other surrounding. The people of Tempe used to plant wheat and there was no processing industry around. They were forced to export their wheat and import processed products. Agriculture was the most practiced form of farming around Tempe due to present of rivers which produced water throughout. When Charles Hayden came up with idea of building a miller in Tempe and later accomplished it, the people who grew wheat got lucky since they had a processing industrial to grind their grains. It was a biggest achieved and 100 year later the structure still stands strong and continues with its functions. In Our Story, n.d., the author says, “More than 100 years later we are re-creating Mr. Hayden’s vision. By growing the same heritage grains on the same land, we are bringing back a time when flour was non-hybridized, minimally processed and flavorful” (Our Story, n.d.).

The building brought about a number of advantages in Tempe. It was the first story building in Tempe which attracted attention from different people. The people wanted to study the building and also interact with the minds which came up with such a structure. This led to visitors who would tour the place in different times to study the iconic building and the use of reinforced material to build it. The structure led to growth of Tempe town. The town of Tempe grew as a result of this structure which apart from milling attracted other people to open different types of businesses such as restaurants around the place. It was an industry so there were workers who needed other service and hence a town named Tempe grew as first and the Hayden Flour Mill continued to attract attention. The most treasured advantages of this building is how it saved the people of Tempe from exporting their grains. Unlike today industrialization was not grown and few industries were found in different parts of world. In many parts of the world people used traditional measures to process and preserve their farm products. Hayden Flour Mill helped the people by giving them an alternative way to process their grains especially wheat grains which they used to export and import already processed wheat products for their use. It also served as one of sectors which drived the economy of Tempe. In 1963 it was noted that the city economic sector was diversified into industry, agriculture and Arizona state university (Sweeney andJennifer, 10). Today the building continues to serve different purposes and enables those who use it to earn money. Under the Rio Salado Foundation the building was renovated and it is seen to bring various advantages as well as preserving the construction history and the milling history. Under this foundation a great lawn and was built on the north side of the mill which supplies event venues for small meetings such concerts and small weddings and also offers community fitness classes (The Hayden Flour Mill Project, n.d.). showcasing the equipment used during those times continues by moving movable equipment’s to the windows and lighting them to make seen (The Hayden Flour Mill Project, n.d.) by those who are willing to known something about the evolution of milling in Tempe. Contradicting stories about the tools and equipment’s used can make one confused and fail to get the real information about Hayden Flour Mill building and making those equipment’s seen is a clear way of doing away with rumors. Rio Foundation has also protected the structure from Vandalism and continued to preserve its purpose. They have removed the fence which was surrounding the building and replaced it with a lighting system to deter vandalism (The Hayden Flour Mill Project, n.d.). They have also planted trees, put and irrigation system and also removed graffiti by making sure that the lower level of the structure got sandblasted (The Hayden Flour Mill Project, n.d.). These actions shows the need to continue keeping the building save, the advantages it us such as bringing in money from tourists who visit the place as well as serving the community.

Hayden Flour Mill building serves as a tourist attraction. It is an ancient building and people especially researchers visit the place to capture the history of that building. The building is famous in Arizona and other parts of the world. Construction was not fully developed during those times. The building was first made using bricks and due to fires which continuously attacked it was rebuild using reinforced concrete. Tourists used to tour the place to see how the structure itself and also learn how it operates since it previously used water as power and later converted to electricity using miller industry. Also the Silos of the building were attractive and different people visited the area to see them. Although other parts of the building have been renovated the silos still stand strong and un-interfered (MacDonald-Evoy). Today people visit the building as an archeological structure. They visit there to learn and see how the milling history was written by the existence of the building in the ancient times. People also visit Tempe due to growth of different types of business which sprout as result of the milling activities of the Hayden Flour Mill building. Tempe town also attracts tourist due to its strong culture. Tempe possesses a rich historical ethic(Hallam and Nathan, iii), giving people more reasons to visit the place. Across section of Tempe is covered by hotels to host visitors and other people who visit there to carry out different businesses. Today plans to change the setting of Hayden building continues. The iconic building is expected to get its planned makeover from a Chicago based Company known as Baum which specializes on revitalizing old structures (MacDonald-Evoy). The project is expected to differentiate the whole structure into different useful spaces such as office spaces, retail shops, restaurants and also outside amenities (MacDonald-Evoy). The company will do the project together with Aparium group of hotels (“Hayden Flour Mill”). They project is also expected to convert the building into a five story building hotel which will include the silos as part of the rooms (MacDonald-Evoy). Blufish in his website said, “The two-phase adaptive reuse project will span 150,000 square feet, celebrate the distinguished architectural character of the existing historic structures, and tastefully expand upon the site with the addition of a modern, mid-rise building” (Blufish) .After this project gets accomplished then different activities will go on inside the building which will see increase in revenues. Tourists will continue to come to the place and get history of the developed of the building from bricks, to concrete reinforced structure and to today’s hotel and host of different things including outdoor amenities. People are attracted in history and that’s why there is high percentages of people visiting archeological sites. The Tempe iconic structure served different purposes of visitation and it will also continue to give tourists more reasons to tour the place after it is differentiated to different structures with different purposes. The mills and the silos are iconic and the Tempe city wants to maintain the site as a landmark for future generations (“Hayden Flour Mill and Silos | City of Tempe, AZ”) and that is why it has sources for creative developers who will not make the building lose its iconic meaning. There are also other attractions in the city of Tempe. Tempe Butte is also anchor due to culture left by the Hohokam who once lived there (Jackson, Peyton Leigh).

Hayden Flour Mill was built in the year 1918. It was established Hayden, family, using reinforced concrete to curb the damage caused by fire incidences when it happens. The building mills and silos, which were later added, are iconic, and the city of Tempe has received visitors since them coming to study them and write history from them. The building tells the tale of construction history and the milling history in Tempe. The people of Tempe were farmers and mostly grew wheat and had no place to take for processing. The building saved them since farmers could bring their grains there for processing. The building used water for power and was later converted and started using electricity. The city has looked for develops to re-innovate the 100 years old building and make it useful in different ways.
