Should there be regulations on how these consumer data are used?
As individual shops for various shopping outlets, the shop owners collect the data and use it for various purposes. The main purpose of the shops collecting the data is to use it for their customer and analysis and get to know how they can improve their services to meet the customer needs. Using the data in such a positive way is good for the customer, but the same data can be used at the disadvantage of the customer. For instance, insurance firms can use the data to deny customer insurance covers or even increase the cost of the covers. Such makes it necessary for the regulation measure to be enacted on how the consumer data is used.
Regulation measures are needed to ensure that the personal data of the consumer is protected against being used to disadvantage the consumer. Through the protection of the data, consumer privacy will be guaranteed which will promote the right to privacy of the consumers. Also, regulating consumer data reduces the security risk that the consumers may face when their data is shared among various entities. Once shops collect the consumer data, they should ensure that the data is secure to prevent disadvantaging the consumers when the data lands in the wrong hands.
