Two examples of how legal drugs can become a form of deviance would be using the drugs to get high on and or overdose on. Drinking and smoking may also become examples of deviance in certain situations. If a person is intoxicated in public then they have become deviant since that behavior is not socially acceptable and it is also illegal to be drunk in public. So drinking in public is not deviant however becoming drunk in public is. If a person is smoking in a crowded building then that is deviant because alongside with being drunk in public it is not socially acceptable due to the fact that people do not want to be trapped in a place where they are breathing in smoke. It is important to consider smoking and drinking in a course on deviance to make a point that acts do not have to be inherently deviant, they sometimes can become deviant in certain situations and scenarios.

What makes any legal drug deviant is how someone chooses to use them. Drinking alcohol is legal if you are over 21 years old but if you are under 21 and drinking alcohol that is deviant but also illegal. Also, it is deviant to give someone too much to drink on purpose just to get them drunk so someone can take advantage of them and possibly sexually assault/ rape them. Alcohol is not a deviant act if the person is drinking responsibly and in the comfort of their own home and does not get behind a wheel if intoxicated. Smoking cigarettes is legal but it also can be considered a deviant behavior is someone is smoking around other people and exposing them to second hand smoke. Plus, the smell of cigarette smoke is so strong and many people have trouble breathing should never be around it, but everyone smokes these days. Smoking can also be a deviant behavior for someone who laced their cigarettes with other harmful drugs and distributes those cigarettes to others without informing the buyers that the cigarettes are laced with other drugs.
