Dementia is a cognitive issue that affects the mental processes as an effect of brain damage by either disease or trauma (WebMD, 2019).It is characterized by memory lapse, decrease in reasoning capacity, change in character and weak mental functioning. Since this transition is not part of growing old, it affects daily activities, freedom and relationships. Consequently, one will develop a problem in communication and issue solving. With time, these symptoms will worsen depending on the type of dementia and the part of the brain affected. There are many types of Dementia but the most common ones are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular and mixed dementia. This paper discusses the causing factors and how to prevent the condition.
Dementia is caused by various factors. It is an overall term covering several mental dysfunctions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease which contribute a great deal to the development of dementia. Furthermore, some people develop dementia due to a brain damage caused by an accident, a fall or even a concussion (Helpguide, n.d). Consequently if the central nervous and the vascular systems are infected chances of one developing the condition are very high. Excessive and long term usage of drugs and alcohol may equally lead to dementia.
However, dementia can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is advisable for one to avoid smoking. Equally, maintaining a healthy a weight by eating healthy and plenty of exercise. Consequently, one should learn to manage long-term health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Finally, one should be socially active by involving him or herself in social communities like churches. However, can take aspirin if the doctor recommends.
