Part I
Bill McKibben is passionate about the environment, especially going by the way he speaks about human interaction and the environment. He is aware of how human civilization has taken a toll on the environment and has boldly spoken against environmental degradation through his first book, The End of Nature in 1989 (McKibben, 2019). He believed that human beings had altered the planet to the extent that it was almost impossible to redeem it. The central theme around Bill’s work is on the environment, human civilization, and technological advancements. Some several pertinent questions and topics have been triggered by reading the well-articulated article by Bill. Two potential research topics might be used to understand these claims well.
The first question is, “Do you think the human game is to be blamed for the environmental degradation?” and “Do you think there are enough interventions to the challenges we are experiencing?” With these questions, it is possible to delve deeper into how actions by individuals have destroyed the environment. Individuals can be able to show how these issues can be addressed as well as the roles that we can play in society to undo the damages of the human game. With the first question, one can go ahead and show several instances when the human game has led to environmental degradation directly or indirectly. Finding answers to this question can be core to finding solutions to these problems. For the second question, it is possible to get into the direction of finding remedies, solutions, and interventions to these challenges. Additionally, one can also go in the direction of discussing how collaborating with others can go a long way in helping reduce these challenges.
The author also passes his message with ease, especially when he starts by giving a narrative that we can either connect with or relate to. The other impressive thing is how he can show a relationship between the issues he is talking about. He can show a relationship between modernization, the human game, history, commerce, and spirituality to the central issue of environmental degradation. How he refers to the human game as “unimaginably deep, complex, and beautiful” is something to ponder about. He believes that this game is endangered; however, one might be tempted to question when this started (McKibben, 2019). Reading the article by McKibben only leaves an individual with more questions as opposed to answers, and anyone worried about the life we are living will delve into this more deeply.
Part II
Human activities are slowly “eating” our environment to the extent that nature is suffering. We are experiencing natural calamities, disasters, and catastrophes of significant magnitudes, which only leaves us grappling for solutions. Most of the challenges experienced by our environment are a result of ignorance, hypocrisy, and collective irresponsibility of ourselves and our leaders. Greta Thunberg is a single individual who is tired by the lack of initiative by our leaders and is working within her means to bring change. Greta’s biggest worry is that the young are having their future stolen when leaders fail to take action and provide solutions to environmental challenges (YouTube, 2020). Campaigning to trigger change and call humans to take care of their environment is a worthwhile cause that should be supported by all persons. Climate change is real, and those denying this should reconsider their reasoning as it has seen to affect several regions around the world.
The planet is in great danger and failing to realize this will be the biggest mistake of our times because it is the right time for us to heal it. Children should worry about their future because with the nature of calamities in present times, it is probably going to worsen in the coming years. In case this happens, children will be left with a planet whose biodiversity is in shackles and cannot support their existence. Taking small steps towards the right direction can help undo the wrongs and correct the situation. However, these small steps should be supported by all, as this is the only way to get long lasting change. Children and other young activists should come out, even more, bolder and take charge because this has not happened with the leaders who have been entrusted with this. Taking a different approach towards finding the solution should also be key as real change can only come if we devise new methods.
