Growth Mindset
Introduction
The mind is a powerful thing. The things you tell yourself have the ability to either influence your growth or your stagnancy. You can either choose to adopt the growth mindset or the fixed mindset; it’s all up to you. A growth mindset aids in ensuring a person’s evolution towards a higher level through hard work, dedication and willingness to learn from their mistakes, a fixed mindset, on the other hand, limits a person thus little to no progress in their lives. People with this mindset believe that the effort they put is enough and there is no need to work beyond their limits, that whatever talent or abilities they were born with is sufficient and are comfortable in being ‘just good’. Having a growth mindset is ideal in our lives today as there is usually something new to learn every single day and there’s room for growth and betterment of our future. It is also vital for brain growth and assists in embracing challenges head-on.
As a child, it was easier to settle on the comfortable and familiar areas. I saw no need to indulge myself in things that would help me grow as that was unfamiliar territory. In school, if grades were considered good, then that was good enough; the work I had put was sufficient, and as long as my parents were happy the that was it. Looking back, I had learnt to apply the fixed mindset, and it was very limiting. I never got to know just how much potential I had. As I grew up, I learnt that there was more out there, and I had the freedom and opportunity to explore and acquire more knowledge. Being comfortable and settling in a familiar environment is not good enough; thus, the need to grow, step out of my comfort zone and push myself even harder. The need to learn and improve myself proved to open a lot of doors and potential I never knew I had. Applying ourselves in the world today gives us the room to make mistakes and use those as lessons to improve ourselves and make progress as we grow (Wu, 2014).
Having the growth mindset ensure that in this competitive world we live in, we exert ourselves striving to give the very best. Learning more about how the world works make it easier to know how to excel in the business world. One might not succeed on the first attempt and should not be discouraged by it, preferably using that failure as a lesson. Persisting in acquiring knowledge and skills applicable in your area of expertise ensures that you are well equipped to make changes and achieve high levels of success.
Conclusion
You are what you make of yourself and not what you tell yourself to be and thus having a growth mindset is very important. This mindset enables you to push yourself and focus more on learning, accepting advice, and working harder to achieve your goals. You also have the opportunity to grow as a person, change your behaviours as well as understanding the need to change to achieve the desired outcome. The growth mindset also allows you to learn from your mistakes and be able to achieve greatness.
