Pakistan super league
Part 1
Pakistan super league was launched in 2015 by PCB. It’s a professional twenty20 cricket league. Initially, it comprised of five teams named after capital cities of Pakistan’s provinces, including Islamabad, later PCB added another group making it six teams in total, namely Islamabad united, Multan sultans, Quetta gladiators, Peshawar zalmi, Lahore qalandars and Karachi king. The teams, also called franchises, are consolidated as a single entity under PSL. Each franchise has its investors and controllers.
The PSL matches commence in February and last until March tentatively. The matches are played in a twenty20 cricket format; the teams play in a double round-robin format. Top four high scoring teams play against each other, and the qualified two teams fight for PSL final cup.
The first edition of the Pakistan super league was played in UAE in 2016, with Islamabad united as the winner. Followed by the second edition played in Lahore in 2017 with Peshawar zalmi as winning team. The third and fourth edition of PSL was played in Karachi with Islamabad united and Quetta gladiators as champions, respectively. The fifth edition, also called PSL 5, commenced in February 2020, but it couldn’t complete its tenure and was postponed indefinitely due to the covid19 pandemic.
PSL 5 was going to be played in Pakistan’s various stadiums. There were going to be total of 34 matches commencing from February 22 to March 22. The final was to be held in Karachi national stadium. It was stated by chairman PCB that it’s a great moment for Pakistan cricket that all the match tournaments are being hosted in Pakistan. According to the schedule released by PCB, it was decided that 14 matches out of 34 will be played in Ghaddafi Stadium Lahore, nine matches in national stadium Karachi, eight matches in Rawalpindi cricket stadium and three matches in Multan cricket stadium.
Part 2
The expected revenue to be generated from PSL5 was around 3.69 billion. Owing to the COVID19 pandemic, PSL5 is currently being withheld. This risk was unseen, but we should keep in mind that there are always risks associated with such massive budgeted projects. For example, governance risk can be attributed to PSL5; it includes risks related to malfunctioning in conduction of matches by the cricket board, and it fails to govern things smoothly. Other associated risks can be strategic and operational i.e., poor implantation, production and distribution, technological malfunctions. Additionally, there are risks associated with external hazards, like, for example, the current coronavirus outbreak i.e., pandemic because of which such a high budgeted project is suffering. Such sorts of risks are always associated, so investors and controllers should equip themselves with right and timely solutions.
Part 3
The product of PSL is the audience. The audience is of many types; there is one type that watches matches in the stadium; another is the television set audience who watch matches at home. Then some people watch live transmissions via the internet; these people can be from all around the world. Such a diverse and enormous number of audiences is the end product of PSL.
