Vincent Van Gogh’s Art Work
Vincent Willem Van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist and among the most influential artists in western art’s history. He was able to create 2100 art pieces, including 860 oil paintings, in just over a decade. His art most included; landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, and still lifes. Most of his work is dated toward the end of his life. He was able to create 900 pieces between 1881to 1890. Vincent Gogh’s artwork has gained popularity among many art lovers who find his pieces authentic and an excellent addition to the world of art. As a painter, he believed that it was essential for him to master drawing before adding color. One crucial aspect noticeable in the paintings is Van Gogh’s bold use of color, which is evident in his landscape and still lifes art pieces. Some of his most famous pieces include; starry night, sunflowers, the potato eaters, poppies, the bedroom, irises, the mulberry tree, the night chef, and the blossoming almond tree.
The Potato Eaters Critique
‘The potato eaters’ is considered to be among the best in Vincent’s collection. Nonetheless, it has drawn considerable criticism. In my perspective, the use of dark colors and the presence of mistakes in objects makes the painting uninviting.
Vincent Gogh used a dark interior with blue, green, and brown colors. I find the colors too gloomy for a home setting. Using harsh lighting and blue hue, Vincent Gogh intended to depict the terrible experiences of Irish people during the potato famine in the 19th century. By doing so, he hoped to present the intensity of hardships endured by Irish people, but I feel it adds to the gloominess. In addition to this, the presence of mistakes in painted objects makes it unappealing.
