Vroom’s Expectancy Theory
1.0 Emotional Intelligence
Conventionally, emotions significantly influence human processes such as perception, attention, reasoning, learning, and problem-solving. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to undertake accurate reasoning on emotions and the ability to deploy one’s emotional knowledge and emotions to enhance thought (Kinicki and Williams, 2020). Individuals with a high emotional intelligence degree understand their emotions, what they mean, and how they can impact other people. There are four components, namely; self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, and relationship management. As a manager, these components are essential and can impact an individual’s performance at work in diverse situations and settings.
One, self-awareness refers to the ability to read your emotions and evaluate them accurately to assess how they affect others (Kinicki and Williams, 2020). Therefore, if one is self-aware, he will always know how he feels and how his actions and emotions can affect others. As a manager, being self-aware implies having a profound picture of my strengths and weaknesses and behaving with humility. To improve my self-awareness, I need to keep a journal to write down my thoughts, which may move me to a higher degree of self-awareness (Mark 2018). Two, self-management is developed based on self-awareness and denotes the ability to control one’s emotions to prevent them from controlling you. This component emphasizes that, as a manager, I should not let my emotions affect my integrity and honesty. This component is essential for managers as junior staff may find it challenging to work for an individual who is not in control of themselves and whose reactions entirely depend on his/her current mood. Three, social awareness entails an individual’s ability to emphasize and take a perspective with other individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds to understand their ethical and social norms for behavior. As a manager, I should be able to tell when my employee is not in their normal moods by observing their attitude and body language. Also, I should show them empathy and let them know they can see me if they need anything. Having such a relationship may create an understanding and safe working, which is key to the running of the day-to-day operations of a business. Four, relationship management refers to the ability to convincingly and communicate, build concrete personal bonds, and disarm conflicts (Kinicki and Williams, 2020). As a manager, I should be able to settle disputes amicably and enhance the building of concrete personal bonds between employees. Among the four elements of emotional should, I should develop my relationship management elements as in several occasions, I have been unable to disarm conflicts and build personal bonds.
2.0 Application of Vroom’s Expectancy Theory
When revising and doing my weekly assignments, I put more effort and time irrespective of me being aware that I can simply copy the assignments from my course notes. This is because I am well aware that my semester’s grade could make a reflection of my decisions in a negative way. Therefore, I would rather put in the extra effort and time in learning rather than cheat.
This implies that my efforts are proportional to my performance in school. In other words, I work hard to ensure that my assignments are up to the grading rubric cube criteria. If they do not match, I get back to ensure that I rectify the missing detail before submission. Understanding that I have put intensive effort and time into my studies gives me an urge to score a good grade.
3.0 Globalization and Diversity
Over the past decade, the global economy has immensely evolved. As a result, firms can easily and efficiently trade with counterparts from other countries (McFarline, 2018). To operate smoothly, firms are gradually incorporating diversity from the methods of production, culture, money systems, to means of trading. For instance, due to globalization, one can easily buy or sell commodities from China or the UK. For firms in the United States to smoothly transact with firms from China, they are now incorporating the diversity through, for instance, facilitating payments through means a means that is acceptable in the other country. With the growing technological advancements, firms should develop strategies to increase efficiency in managing diversity.
