Research paper Topic.
My research topic will focus on protest music of the 1960s.
Introduction.
For many years, protest music has existed because of the extent to which citizens have been fed up with the status quo (Wood, 2014, p. 8). The protest songs mainly aim at addressing injustice on minority groups or calling for the government to tackle an issue. The first protest songs to be composed were designed to bring people together around a key mission. In the 1960s, the main issues during that time were the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. This article will compare the life and music of Bob Dylan and Nina Simone, illustrating the various kinds of protest music from the 1960s.
Bob Dylan was famously known for his great writing skills, which he integrated a communication mechanism the audience could relate to. His music had a great impact on the protest movement because the citizens closely related to the need for change and also see society’s corrupt nature. His songs established ab emotional connection among the listeners because of how well he incorporated American values in the songs. In his song “Blowin’ in the Wind,” Dylan pushed the civil rights movement. On the other hand, through her music, Nina was able to address racial discrimination and slavery. Most of Simone’s songs represented the life of the African Americans who were being discriminated against because of their skin color and hair texture. A song like “Mississippi Goddam” addressed the injustices the black individuals were facing.
