The Future of Transport Technology
Many experts often link the future of transport technology to electric cars and self-driven cars. The article that I chose for this paper is by Scientific American Custom Media and is titled “Self-driving cars to test city limits.” This article offers an analysis of how self-driven car technology is shaping up. The article describes how various self-driven cars have debuted in the street of Miami, and has been pioneered by Ford and Walmart. These Autonomous vehicles have been tipped to enhance the needs of shoppers as they offer delivery services. The article cites that the success of autonomous vehicles is always dependent on how these cities are prepared for them. The article mentions that “It takes a lot of work with a city and its people to build a successful autonomous-vehicle operation.” (2019). The Autonomous Vehicles (AV) needs to guarantee safety as it navigates through the streets. The article, therefore, notes that cars need to have a proper computer and Artificial Intelligence technology. Therefore, safety also means that these cars have to drive slowly. Manoeuvring and sensing of various signs, people, other vehicles and objects on the road in time requires advanced ultra-fast sensors. However, the article reveals that certain infrastructures aren’t still available; thus, the AV’s can only be used for deliveries instead of transporting humans. However, even when these will be available, these cars would still go slower than human drivers to avoid human-machine conflicts. The article also points out that cities will need to create Autonomous vehicles lanes to enhance their efficiency. The article also notes that the rise in Autonomous vehicles in future is likely to affect the public transport sectors by putting them out of business. I chose this article because it assesses the technological revolution in the transport sector. Future cars are often predicted to be self-driven just as shown in fiction movies. However, this transition is one that still needs time as safety is often a paramount factor. The above article analyzes the challenges and that this revolution faces; the effects and the benefits too.
