The different health faculties are aiming at integrating research and evidence-based practice in optimizing patient outcomes. Health professionals need to distinguish between the various research methodologies to conduct their research effectively. According to Polit & Beck (2018), sound research is the base of effective nursing practices, and nurses should take the initiative to expand their clinical expertise to critically analyze different research articles that form the foundation of EBP. Quantitative and qualitative research can be used independently or consequently to attain a broad knowledge base of proven knowledge or fill existing gaps (Rutberg& Bouikidis, 2018). Quantitative analysis uses numerical data, opinions, behavior, and measurable data formulae to quantify a problem. On the other hand, qualitative research seeks to understand an existing problem using views, studying human behaviors, and is explorative. Therefore, it is important to gain a deep understanding of a research topic and purpose statement to select the appropriate methodology.

Research can be applied to different healthcare departments to improve the quality, safety, and outcomes of care. Empirical research is a source of knowledge and information for health providers obtained from scientific experiments and observations. It is correct that nurses and other health professionals have easy access to research topics and first-hand information. Daily interactions with patients, provided one is willing to learn, patient experiences, concerns, complaints, and suggestions can serve as new directions for nursing practice. We should remember that nursing was formed from a research foundation. Nursing was adapted with the evolving of nursing practice from the time of Florence Nightingale, and it is our duty to continue improving nursing practice. Technology innovations have improved access to research articles at any point in time. Therefore, we have to utilize current evidence-based practice to provide quality and safe patient-centered care.
