Areas of Strength in Paula’s Case
Paula demonstrates strength by being able to manage through the various challenges despite being overwhelmed. Despite the conditions, she can make very healthy decisions even though there were varying opinions from other medical professionals.
Perspectives of the Members of the Multidisciplinary Team
Due to the underlying conditions, the physicians considered Paula’s illness very concerning and would need to terminate the pregnancy. On the other hand, the social worker prefers a different view of the situation and encourages Paula to carry on with the pregnancy to the end. In the presence of the differing opinion, Paula can continue to the end, and she is able to give birth safely.
The Model Used by the Social Worker
The social worker uses the strength-based model to encourage Paula to pull through. This seems to work well to enable Paula to manage her comorbid conditions well (Strengths-based approach: Practice Framework and Practice Handbook, n.d.). Also, the social worker employs collaboration with other healthcare providers, and this provides a better approach to the management of Paula’s condition as different perspectives are enlisted.
Potential Bias by the Social Worker
There is a possibility of bias in the social worker’s assessment because Paula suffers from different conditions, and thus, using a single tool like the DSM 5 would result in a skewed understanding of the condition. Different assessment models focus on different aspects, some on the environment and some on the psychological factors, which would introduce bias.
Strategies to Overcome Bias
It would be necessary to empower Paula with knowledge about other agencies to get the required social support (Kuluski, Ho, Hans, & La Nelson, 2017). I will also use empathy in Paula’s case, which would help eliminate stigma and obtain the best assessment outcome.
