Chapter 4 of Carol Dweck’s Mindset: The New Psychology of Success looks at the kind of mindset that a person needs to have to be a champion in sports. Dweck seems to be rebuking the people who utterly believe in talent and “naturals”, but instead she emphasizes on the ned for the right mindset of a champion in sports. She begins the chapter by talking about the story of Billy Beane, who was a natural but lacked the mindset of a champion and with time, he fell from glory in the sports industry. Dweck suggests that whether a person is naturally endowed or not, for them to be successful and maintain the success, they need to culture the mindset of a champion and that is growth mindset which emphasizes on effort. Dweck says that every player needs to have the discipline to practice and train to be better each day. She goes ahead and tells the stories about Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth and Wilma Rudolph to demonstrate the need for sportspersons to develop the right mindset for a champion. Effort produces incredible results and people who were not known to be best, rise and stay at the top because of practice. The naturals who do not want to train and practice, do not maintain their success for long. Therefore, I agree with Dweck that each sportsperson needs to cultivate the mindset of a champion.
