Coronaviruses belong to a large family of viruses that are associated with illness that range from a simple cold to more severe form of the diseases. A new strain of the disease now called COVID-19 did emerge in December 2019 hence the name. the disease was first discovered as a case of pneumonia whose cause was unknown in China in the city of Wuhan. WHO received reports of its existence on 31st December 2019.The outbreak was later declared a public health emergence on 13th January 2020 having spread to almost all the continents of the world. The spread is mainly attributed to people travelling from one place to another. The agent of transmission of the disease is humans. The signs and symptoms range from but not limited to flu like symptoms, dry cough, chest pains and difficulty in breathing. It mainly affects the respiratory system.
COVID-19 has taken its toll on the world on all aspects and all angles possible. It has not only shattered the economy but rendered it useless in the fight of this pandemic. Schools have been closed, travel restriction imposed on all nations, people have either lost their jobs or received a pay cut and also many nations have fallen to its feet with the rising number of deceased persons. There is uncertainty of when things will go back to normal with COVID-19 having exposed the existing vulnerability of different states of the world. there is a rising concern on the psychological effects of this pandemic.
The strategies put in place to curb the virus include but not limited to maintaining social distance of at least one meter apart, wearing of protective gears for example masks when in pubic. Additionally, people are encouraged to wash their hands with soap and water and to use hand sanitizers that have at least 60% alcohol. The public is encouraged to seek medical help if they experience any of the mentioned signs and symptoms of the disease. Various quarantine facilities are put in place to isolate the ones infected and the public is being urged to stay at home in order to break the chain of the spread.
