The role of the government is to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. every citizen has the basic rights and freedoms that cannot be taken from them, and it is the role of the government to provide protection against the violation of such rights. The government also has the duty to provide for the basic needs of all citizens in that it is the caretaker of its people. this paper will discuss how Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama’s presidential policies change ideas about the role of the federal government in the live of American citizens and how the language of freedom and security were used during the cold war and the period after September 11,2001.
Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama’s presidential policies change ideas about the role of the federal government in the live of American citizens since they assured the citizens that the role of the government was to take care of its citizens. the three united state’s presidents always assured the citizens that the government would always provide for them, and if a certain policy does not work they would find the solution through the other one. Franklin Roosevelt was not only the chief executive; he was also the chief legislator, in that he was involved in drafting of policies (Garner et al. 112). He was the first one to create a white house staff and advisors that worked full time and formulated foreign and domestic policies using their expertise and the passion they had for the government. All this was to ensure that his capacity as the president was enhanced and increased. There are a lot of similarities between the leadership of Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama. They were both comfortable under their skin and had the same stles of transition (Arcimavičienė Liudmila 95). They kept reassuring the government that their governments would provide competent leadership, and although they were not sure which ideas would work for them, if one policy did not work, they would try another one. giving the public the reassurance made the number of their supporters increase within a short period of time.
The similarity of how the language of freedom and security were used during the cold war and the period after September 11, 2001 is that they were suspended or limited. In the period after September 11, 2001, the government limited the freedom and security of its people to allow it arrest the people involved, and to prevent occurrence of another war. They adopted antiterrorism legislation to arrest and persecute the suspected terrorists within the borders. During the cold war, the freedoms and security were also suspended, the freedoms of speech and to own properties were restricted during these periods (Soltani Rasool and Maryam). The contrast between the two periods is that in the period after september11, 2001, the courts were used to limit the rights and security of its citizens, while during the cold war; the government suspended the freedoms and security of the citizens. During the period after september11, 2001, the courts suspended the writ of habeas corpus that allowed people to be prosecuted without proof.
Indeed there are instances where the security and freedoms of people get suspended by the government for some reasons. Although the government has the right to promote the rights and security of its people, it also has the mandate to ensure that people do not misuse such freedoms and security.
