ACCESS CONTROL-what is it, how it works, why it is a method of
Access control, in the fields of information and physical security, is a technique through which access to view or use resources, or access a place is restricted. It is the selective restriction to use, enter, or consume resources, a concept used to minimize risks in an organization. To access these restricted resources, one would need to get permission/ authorization.
Access control minimizes unauthorized access risk to protect the information, equipment, employees, patrons, and other business assets. The system guarantees that users are who they claim they are and if they are permitted to access the premises or data.
Access control has two components:
- Authentication
- Authorization
The three main types of control are mandatory, discretionary, and role-based access models.
This is generally how access control works:
Access control readers use established credentials like key fob, fingerprints, and keycards to access the building.
