Rejection Sensitivity and Social Media
Technology is rapidly changing in society currently; thus, implying that there are improvements that are made within organizations that rely on technology for their productivity. Therefore, humans are constantly changing their lives to ensure that they are continually embracing technology to conduct their activities. Social media technology is one of the improvements that is continually evolving and in a rapid manner. Various social networking sites have currently emerged within the society, and which the entire population is using these technologies for different purposes. One of the most popular networking sites that individuals use to engage for communication and connection despite the distance is Facebook. Statistics reveal that the social media company has a total of one billion Facebook users. There are many people whose identity is strictly from their social media. Some have become popular because they have great personalities. However, it is the same social media website that people get rejected through being ignored, abused, and other people stop talking to them. The purpose of the study is to analyze rejection sensitivity brought about by the increased social media usage in the society, including adverse reactions and expectations from the denial, vulnerable users.
People who face rejection on the social media end up suffering from low self-esteem. A recent study has indicated that the increased usage of social media increases the risk of depression as well as anxiety (Cheung, Lee & Chan, 2015). This is not only caused h the aspect of multitasking when accessing the social media site but by the increased pressure of keeping up with beauty standards and cultural trends, which are usually promoted through the platforms. Increased usage of the platforms increases the risks of unhealthy minds as such people will have a difficult time trying to compare their lives with others. There are false narcissism and voyeurism in such networks that tend to be toxic in people’s lives and specifically in their self-esteem. People tend to value themselves based on the like as well as comments they are likely to receive on posting a photo or video.
Additionally, the frequent use of social media results in negativities in the life of the individual. First, many people influence the development of their personality on social media, but it can be a very negative affect. Many pretend to be something they are not and live in a fantasy world of “likes” (Farahani, Aghamohamadi, Kazemi, Bakhtiarvand & Ansari, 2011). However, social media has a way of making people more reclusive and seclusive. They are unable to function in the real world and have real conversations with real people. The mental stress and torture that the individual will undergo are detrimental upon being rejected. For instance, such people are being isolated, and they will spend much of their time on these social networking sites attempting to react to every comment that they see are rejection and which they are sensitive to in the social networking sites. The second effect is the challenge in striking practical communication skills and understanding with these individuals (Cheung, Lee & Chan, 2015). Communication is critical at the point where there is an exchange of information as well as discussing important matters with other people. The reaction that the rejection sensitive individuals can portray when they are communicating with others can be adverse hence affecting effective communication and understanding among the communication partners.
The other impacts include having a feeling of being unwanted. The greatest problem associated with social media usage is people only get to share the best experience and good feeling regarding their lives (Varnali, & Toker, 2015). The constant barrage of the best experience and good news impacts the vicious cycle whereby individuals post their best experience happening in their lives; thus, causing others to try their level best to keep up with such good things and experience. This kills vulnerability sense, of the genuine experience sharing that is vital for the emotional closeness among friends. When friends avoid sharing the good memories and things with a person, it brings about the person feeling lonely and unwanted by others; thus’ lowering the self-esteem of the person. The low self-esteem makes these individuals be less productive and be subjected to high risks such as discrimination or lack of support in their endeavors when they are handling tasks in the organization. Hiding behind the social media networking sites is not a necessary action that the rejection of sensitive individuals should do in their lives.
Conclusions
People who are rejected on social media are at a high risk of suffering challenges such as abuse by other members, or they can even slip into depression and mental health illness. Professionals in healthcare institutions need to provide counseling services and interact with these individuals so that they can address the rejection of sensitive aspects. Communication through the internet is not a bad process, but if it becomes time-consuming, then it affects the life of the user negatively. These are the challenges that result in the rationale of why there should be an address and help to the rejection of sensitive individuals in society. Further, by understanding their issues, psychologist professionals will help them learn how to distinguish the kind comments and the rejection of hurtful comments. These processes will create proper interaction of the rejection of vulnerable individuals with ordinary people in society. A cynical society means that the youth will have peer pressure to other individuals, which will affect society’s growth. In organizations where employees are identified to be rejection sensitive, there is a need to develop regulations on social media use. Individuals should use social media less than average individuals. Such strategies aim to make sure that the individuals do not hide behind social media platforms when handling business activities or when they are faced with life challenges.
