Race and the Revolutionaries
Frederick Douglass
The race has been an afflicting factor in slavery. Most people are subject to toil based on race. Fredrick Douglas was a former slave and abolitionists (Douglass, 2019). After he escapes from slavery and joining abolitionists, he has a feeling that resisting quiet manner is the best action to attain the freedom to the slave people. Gerrit, on the other hand, had views that when governments have a constitution that can abolish slavery, then it must override that constitution and then destroy the slavery movement. Douglas was in support of excessive force in conditions of self-assertion and self-defence. It was a belief he had since he was young since he was against vast revolutions of violent slavery and warfare use to put a stop to slavery movements.
John Brown
They also had strong beliefs in human rights and Golden Rule that came in line with believing God had sovereign powers and that human beings were helpless in the midst of God’s power. Brown seems to be a Christian whose ethics are on the frame of universal compassion and love to other people, especially those that suffer in the yoke of injustice and slavery. Brown always had the drive of seeking justice specifically after Dred Scott trial and had no choice rather than acting in violence.
Legacy of Turner
The belief in force to end slavery: The legal ending turned some abolition movements to organizations that were hopeless to those that were advocating for change via demonstration and passive resistance (Lee, 2019). Since there was no more hope, Brown decided on using violence as a way of achieving his goals. Hopelessness made Brown and his colleagues kill five settlers violently. They shot, stabbed, and chopped them using swords. His aim of the attack was including the white men who had strong convictions on slavery and the slaves who had the urge of rising and fighting for their freedom.
Historical Impact
The belief in God to end slavery: The driving force in Turner and Brown was a way of an obligation and has no choice on their side. The tuner was a slave from his child age, and there was no reason for believing that he would get freedom sooner. He was sure that he was called by God to save his community from slavery. The irony in the Bible is in use as an enforcement tool to the slavery ideals amongst the slaves and whites and also inspiring slave revolutions to be vicious.
Thesis
The thesis statement in the article is that violence was the only means of destroying slavery and are viewed as unequal and different historically because of each man’s racial identity. My view according to the thesis
I’m in disagreements with this thesis because violence is not a way of people obtaining freedom. Violence results in bloodshed and loss of life, and instead of using a violent form, people can use peaceful demonstrations to air out their votes. People can use peaceful protests and memorandums as a way of ending slavery in a calm and peaceful means (Oswald, Durham & Bates, 2019).
