- One main character in the movie is Coach Gaines, and his type of leadership is one that fosters a cooperative environment, nurtures empowerment, and has structural decision-making and problem-solving process. In one instance, Coach Gaines encourages one of his players: Mike, to work hard despite his mother being an alcoholic (SOAP2DAY). And these words empower Mike to focus on the game. For instance, despite narrowly losing the final game to Carter, the Permian High School football team falls behind, however, the hard work of Mike and his teammates, they compete effectively. As a coach, Gaines creates a cooperative environment throughout the community by training and guiding the Permian High School football team to represent the Permian society proficiently. Besides, the city was facing economic challenges; therefore, they rely on a Friday ritual, and their unfulfilled expectations are, in turn, shifted to the love and support of the Permian High School football team athletes.
- The film is freely available on an online website; that means it has bypassed theatres entirely. Given the extensive technological development, online platforms have proven to be more efficient in terms of access to films and a broad range of entertainment services. Consequently, there is a countless number of websites that enable film consumers from all over the globe to access film with passing through their respective theatre administration. Some of these bypassed film platforms are free of charge, and this explains why many people prefer them to other official websites, which charge subscription fees their services. Bypassing could be avoided by implementing policies and regulations that guide the release of movies. What is more, websites play a significant role in reaching a wide range of people; however, they should be evaluated to establish and utilize reliable sites.
- Discussions play a vital role in sending and receiving information within a small group. In the Friday night lights film, there are various examples of verbal cues and non-verbal cues. Concerning verbal cues, spoken language is one the most common form of communication in the movie. To be more precise, Don Billingsley and his father verbal cue when they are arguing after the Permian High School football team loses the game against Midland Lee (SOAP2DAY). Similarly, Coach Gaines encourages one of his players (Mike) verbally; by advising him to work hard and stay focused despite his mother being an alcoholic. Concerning non-verbal cues, after the defeat against the Midland Lee football team, Don Billingsley and his father get into a heated exchange; then, Charles gets mad and throws his championship ring by the freeway. The act of throwing objects is a non-verbal cue, perhaps indicating frustration or anger.
- There are various types of power resources in the film. To be more precise, rewards, Don Billingsley fights his drunk father because he was mad that they did not win. At one point, Don Billingsley’s father was a student at Permian High School and played for the football team. And most importantly, he won a state championship as a student in high school, and he even had a ring to prove it (SOAP2DAY). The fact that Don Billingsley’s father had a ring is proof of reward power resource. Another power resource is legitimate authority. Coach Gaines had the authority of the football team. His leadership is one that fosters a cooperative environment, nurtures empowerment, and has structural decision-making and problem-solving process. The last power resource is personal qualities; the individual quality of Coach Gaines was charisma; in that, he was an excellent communicator, and this enabled him to lead the football team efficiently.
- In the initial scenes of the film, Coach Gaines and the team members: the Permian Panthers, had the dream of winning the state championship. However, individual members within the Permian High School football team were facing a wide range of challenges. To be more precise, the fullback Don Billingsley could not handle the ball effectively, and this affected his coordination with the other team members during gameplays. What is more, Don Billingsley faced emotional distress since he was constantly abused by his alcoholic father (SOAP2DAY). Who won the state championship in the same school as a student. The team faced various challenges; however, they were able to overcome through the leadership of Coach Gaines. He fostered a cooperative environment, nurtured empowerment, and had structural decision-making and problem-solving process. In one instance, Coach Gaines encourages one of his players: Mike, to work hard despite his mother being an alcoholic.
- The first listening style in the film is critical listening. And it is present in the scene where Coach Gaines talks to Mike, in a bid to motivate and encourage him to focus on the game. Mike was under emotional distress because his mother was an alcoholic. And this affected his education, but importantly his play on the football team. However, since Mike was a critical listener, he took instructions and from Coach Gaines, which impacted his mentality positively and enabled him to stay healthy, disciplined, and focused on the game. The second listening style is appreciative listening. In the last game, when the Panthers fall behind and eventually lose against the Midland Lee, Don Billingsley fights his drunk father. The latter later apologizes and justifies his love for the championship (SOAP2DAY). By appreciatively listening to his father, those ideas prove useful since they motivate Don Billingsley to continue playing despite the challenges.
