Brief Biography of Indra Nooyi
One can’t exhaust fully on the topic of global women business leaders without mentioning former CEO of PepsiCo, Madam Indra Nooyi. In the now known as Chennai village, which was formerly known as Madras, Indra was born in October 1955. after earning a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Madras Christian college in 1976 and later on a master’s in business administration in an Indian institute of management, Indra moved to the united states. She advanced her education in management, receiving a master’s.
She worked in various companies e.g., Boston consulting group, Motorola Inc., ABB, before moving to Pepsi. This Indian born American businesswoman rose through the ranks in Pepsi from being a senior vice president incorporate strategies to being the president and the chief financing officer of the company. Her most significant achievement being marked by assuming the title of CEO in 2006, where she held the position until 2018 when she stepped down. She became the chairman of the board as well (HOLLAR, 2019).
Unique leadership qualities and character traits.
Indra possessed unique character traits that put her way ahead in the game. For starters, Indra used the notion of imagining herself as the president. The idea behind this notion was inspired by her mother, who would occasionally ask Indra and her sisters what they would do is they were the prime minister. Her mother thereby showed Indra that there were no limitations, and she could be whatever she wanted. This helped Indra gain confidence and be assured of her abilities and skills. Also, Indra developed a niche skill.
This involves finding a specific talent or skill that suits you perfectly and using it. Nooyi is skilled in using research to solve complicated issues. When faced with complex situations, Nooyi always used analysis and finding more about the topic before coming up with a decision based on factual evidence. Not only that, but Nooyi also adopted a thinking strategy of thinking like the customer. She made a point of visiting grocery stores weekly to see Pepsi’s products on the customer’s lens. She even took photos of the products packaged and placement and sent them to her marketing and design team to offer them constructive criticism (Umoh, 2018).
Leadership traits
Nooyi is a visionary. This connotation means that each global economy components are part of a domino ensemble. With this in mind, Nooyi set to make decisions that would not only affect Pepsi but the entire world. Through this ideology, Nooyi set to change Pepsi’s operations through enacting policies and advocating that Pepsi make more healthy and sustainable products. This proved successful, and she went on to acquire acquisitions of healthier food brands e.g., Kevita. She also aimed to reduce obesity, and therefore the products cut their sugar, fat, and salt content. Indra is a risk-taker, and she treads with courage. She was subject to criticism when she introduced her new line of vision on making much healthier products.
She emphasized that one should have the courage to innovate and follow through with the implementation of the new ideas amid criticism. She not only led to the production of much healthier products but also created a foundation committed to a healthy weight (GREN, 2019). Her focus on establishing communication skills to build authentic relationships with the customers and colleagues. She, therefore, invested in communication training to improve her skills implemented them whenever when made a public appearance. Also, Indra created a blog and maintained it at Pepsi, which she used as a platform to talk to her employees on various issues (HEDAYATI, 2014).
