Jingle bells music in “Romance Hallmark “film
Jingle bells is an American Christmas song, the song is sung during the Christmas day or when the Christmas is nearing. Jingle bells song is used in Romance Hallmark to get the attention of the viewers to Christmas mood. The music prepares the viewers to expect the film to be about Christmas day or the movies to be filmed in a Christmas mood environment. The jingle bells music in the Romance Hallmark film is successful because of subject matter, storytelling capability and scene matching.
Subject matter criteria. The jingle bells song matches the topic of discussion in this film. The song meets the subject matter criteria, as when the music is playing the cameras can locate a Christmas tree, and this is evident that it is Christmas time. The song is all about the beautiful moment’s people have during the Christmas holiday. The song chorus is created in a simple way that as long as one knows how to talk, he or she can easily sing the song. This is because this song is sung when people are together celebrating and they tend to sing the song together as they enjoy their time. Since the song message is about happy moments, it qualifies to be used in this film to demonstrate Christmas happy moments.
Storytelling criteria. Storytelling criteria are the capability of music to help in telling a story in a movie. The jingle bells music in this movie succeeds in this criteria. For example, the song narrates some moments such as riding on a horse which people get involved during a holiday. This is important to the viewers as they know what to expect when the Christmas day comes. Since the viewers are prepared psychologically on the events and activities that may take place during the Christmas day, viewers become curious of watching the movies and see how the characters will react to Christmas day when it arrives. Like in our case, the viewers are curious to know whether Hellene and her ex-boyfriend will exchange Christmas gifts. The song also tells us how people socialize during holidays, this evident on the where the song says “over the field we go, laughing all the way”. This shows that during Christmas people have fun together as they party.
Scene matching criteria. Right kind of music should be used in the right scene for it to fulfil the purpose in which it was intended to achieve in the film. Jingle bells music successfully fulfilled this criterion in Romance Hallmark movie as it is introduced during the period when people are waiting for the Christmas holiday. As the music is played flowers and Christmas trees can be seen, this is evident that the song is introduced at the right scenes in the movie. This helps the viewers to get a clear understanding of the environment and the period in which the film is performed.
As Helen enters into an elevator, when the song was still playing, we could see a person in the elevator wearing clothes that are famously worn during Christmas celebrations by those who entertain others, especially to entertain children. This shows that the song followed the Scene consideration criteria successfully.
In conclusion, the use of music in a film should follow criteria such as the subject matter, scene criteria and storytelling criteria to successfully fulfil the expectation of why they were used in the film. If the music follows all the requirements, the viewers will have no difficulties in interpreting the reason they are used as they will be able to connect the music and the theme of the movie.
