A three-part Report on an Observational Experience

Purpose – Observe the environment, Note the activities, Record the observations, and file them.

Setting.

It was around five in the evening when I took a seat and sat on the balcony in a bid to keep Oregon’s “stay home” order. Almost everyone in the estate was busy with their evening chores, with a few noises of soothing music playing in the background. The outside environment was a little deserted but with a calmness that depicted peace. The chilly weather seems to be the reason why most people are indoors—a neighbor on the same floor as our passes by and choose to say hi.

Neighbor: Hi there, is everything ok with you?

Me: Hi to you, yes I’m good. (A little excited)

Neighbor: What are you out at this time?

Me: I am doing my assignment for the journalism class. We practicing on information and material gathering for stories. Though there is no much to worry about since nothing gathered here will be published.

Silently, the neighbor passes as she heads her way downstairs. It is now 3 minutes to 6 pm, and people start popping from their houses. The environment becomes a little noisy, but lively.

Observers Comments.

I found this place quite interesting. Considering Oregon’s “Stay home” order, one would expect an active environment with noises, but to the contrary, the area is calm and peaceful. From experience at this site, one would think all the people have to go to their regular job places and all school going kids out for their classes. What betrays this imagination is the cools music that’s coming from the houses and the sweet scents of delicacies. A distance off to the streets in patrol cars that are on surveillance to ensure that the people keep the set orders. A few ambulance sirens could be heard too, though from afar.

I like the peace the environment portrays. This is way better than noises all over for no apparent reason. Probably, an idea this would be, now that people have shifted and are to run all their errands from home, then they need that relaxed environment. The passing neighbors, seem serious with their businesses around the compound. No one seems bothered with what the other person does. This single neighbor who checked on me could go just for the sake of her being a family friend. Other than her, all the others are seen to be more concerned with that which pertains to them.

Conversation

Me: Hello, good evening Tim

Tim: Good evening to you too. How do you do?

Me: How do you do. I hope that all is well with you today

Tim: Yeah, everything is fairing on well

Me: Now that you have been around and indoors to be specific ever since the “stay home” orders, and now for a few minutes you’ve been standing on the balcony, would you please tell me something about your general feeling of the mood of the environment

Tim: Well, I don’t have much to say, but in my view the atmosphere is tense

Me: Why do you say that?

Tim: This is because it is unusually quiet, with very minimal movements. This, in my view, could depict a situation where people are tensed.

Me: Sure

Tim: Exactly

Me: Ok, thanks for your time and have a fabulous evening

Tim: Thank you, and you too.

Me:
