Introduction
The idea of Utopia is possible through the enhancement of the human condition. Utopia is an imagined place, society, or community where nearly everything is perfect such that it focuses on the equality in the government, justice, and the economy. By consideration of the article “Men before the Mirror” by Hopkins and the text “Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain,” by William, this paper argues that Utopia is not possible in modern society.
The text “Men before the mirror” examines the extent to which Duchamp dealt with male subjectivity and male psychology. The switches in the gender view of the “Men Before the mirror” arguably depict a deconstructive society which is inscribed of gender positions as Hopkins suggest that the relationship between the text of Duchamp or Rrose to the photograph of Man Ray portray a culture of pure masculinity (Hopkins, 1998). The textual readymade suggests that Utopia is possible when the society involved is subjected to psychological manipulations that alter its current objectivity.
The creation and presentation of the fountain by Duchamp could have been a way of testing the tolerance and commitment of the American society in the freedom of expression to the new concepts of arts introduced. It is clear from the article that both arts of Duchamp bring about psychological coherence and order to a life where everyone tries to account or attribute things into a new perspective. The fountain was a masterpiece that strongly supported the gendered character and subjecting society to different values, beliefs, and attention (Camfield, 1990).
Conclusion
Utopia in a society can be addressed by justifying gender rights and equality and the provision of intellectual and rational personalities. Hence, a society characterized by modern intervention does not support utopianism. I believe that both the “fountain” and the “men before the mirror” are a significant consequence of the history of a society.
