Sleep Deprivation and Stress among College Students
Introduction
Sleep deprivation and stress has significant effects on students. In this regard, stress makes 68% of students to have sleepless at night, whereas another twenty percent are facing sleeping problems once a week. Stress has adverse effects on the life of a student more than alcohol, caffeine, or the use of electronic devices. Students are experiencing stress and sleep problems during their daily activities. Several reasons cause sleep deprivation and stress and negatively affect the students. It is because some students have stereotypes that they have to stay late at night to finalize their work, which may be one of the unhealthy lifestyles exhibited by students. Also, one of the significant effects of stress and stress and sleep problems is that the student will resort to the use of drugs to ameliorate themselves from the situation.
Thesis Statement: Deprivation of sleep and stress has detrimental effects on the brain functions, which is known to cause lethargy, cognitive decline, and sleepiness during the day, which will be making learners lose focus during class sessions.
Body
Learners have been underestimating the need for having adequate sleep in their lives. As a result, they are not able to sleep during long periods because of stress. Also, they cannot realize that lack of adequate sleep sabotages their health. For example, the lack of enough sleep may affect the cardiovascular and immune systems (Significant Sleep Deprivation and Stress Among College Students, USA, 2020). Because of this, the student predisposes him/herself to the health risks, which are due to lack of enough sleep. One of the effects has been increasing in weight, which will in, turn, predispose students to lifestyle diseases, diabetes, and heart problems.
Secondly, students are facing different challenges like poor performance in class, dropouts, subsequent employment, and drug abuse problems. However, sleep disturbance is the most significant problem that learners are facing in our schools. It is because a lack of adequate sleep makes students start abusing drugs and using alcohol so that they could be regulating sleep and daily activities. Because of sleep problems, poor sleepers will start using medication to prevent sleep problems in the day compared to good sleepers. As a result, poor sleepers expose themselves to the risk of becoming drug addicts. After starting to use the drugs, they will depend on them for their entire lifetime to prevent sleep problems.
Due to sleep and stress problems, healthcare providers in the school has a critical responsibility in ensuring that students can have a night of adequate sleep at night. It is because it is critically important to ensure that students achieve personal wellness, which is similar to having a sufficient diet.
Conclusion
In summary, sleep deprivation and stress have significant effects on students. They are under enormous pressure to perform in class. As a result, adequate sleep is critically important for the refreshing of the cells because it is useful in the processing of the memory. Sleep disturbances and stress on learners can have adverse effects on performance not only for their concertation but also on the level of performance. Thus, it is critically important for students and other stakeholders in the education sector to comprehend how sleep deprivation and stress negatively affects the performance of the student. In this way, they will be able to take prompt measures that can reduce stress and improve the quality of sleep among students.
