There are various exotic animals such as lizards, bats, and monkeys carry elements that can cause illness to human beings. And this has caused the United States to illegalize the process of handling bats. The article is relevant in exploring the adverse impact of exotic pets on human beings.

  1. Evaluate Source

Yasobant, S., Saxena, D., Bruchhausen, W., Memon, F. Z., & Falkenberg, T. (2019). Multi-sectoral prioritization of zoonotic diseases: One health perspective from Ahmedabad, India. PLOS ONE, 14(7), p. 1-13. Retrieved from https://sci-hub.tw/10.1371/journal.pone.0220152

The source is credible in the sense that exotic pets are considered to be the primary course of zoonotic diseases. Any disease that spreads from animals to the people is called zoonotic or zoonosis. It is caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites that spread between animals (usually vertebrates) and humans. In most cases, such an infectious disease resulting from exotic pets may become a pandemic. Zoonoses are diseases that are transmitted to humans from sources in animals. They can be bacteria, parasites, viruses, or fungi. They can be transmitted by blood, saliva urine, or feces of an infected animal. We often think these are diseases in far away places, or from long-ago times (in Black Plague) and not a problem. They present a worldwide public challenge.75% of newly discovered diseases are zoonoses. And they are common. They are often spread by ticks and mosquitos, as well as direct bite or scratches. Many may be familiar: rabies, psittacosis (a concern for those with pet birds), toxoplasmosis from cat feces making litter box dust hazardous to folks with depressed immune systems, and pregnant women. Ringworm, West Nile Virus, Lyme Ds, and Hantavirus sometimes the pathogens may be shed into food and water. Big factor agriculture is varying as workers may get infected.

For instance, the bats originating from North America are affiliated with rabies, yersiniosis, salmonellosis, and histoplasmosis. Elsewhere, the United States considers it to be illegal to engage in any process of handling bats. Wild animals and birds are a huge reservoir of disease vectors, one mutation away from trouble. The combination of uprooting natural habitats, factory farming, proximity to various wildlife, our worldwide travel habits, and the pathogens (especially the RNA viruses) ability to mutate quickly and often make fertile ground for sickness to take seed and spread. There are a lot of humans around, so from the “bugs” point of view, there are plenty of chances to hop ship from wildlife to people. Of course, it is a war, and globally we are on guard and fighting the good fight, but it will be a war we will always have to fight. Diseases that affect only humans are easier to control or eradicate than something that fights guerrilla-style by playing hide, seek, and mutate across multiple life forms.

The source is useful in the sense that if a pathogen has an animal and environmental reservoir, it is impossible to eliminate the disease from one species (humans) without also eliminating it from its reservoir because there will always be spillover. Rabies is the closest to an eradicable zoonotic disease as we have; if we could eliminate canine rabies, we would virtually eliminate human rabies. In this case, it is resources, attention, and will that are lacking. Even if we accomplished this, there would still be sporadic instances of humans bitten by other rabid animals, like bats, cats, raccoons, etc. This is why our best hope in controlling the infectious zoonotic disease is 1) to stop human encroachment on wild animal habitats to minimize contact and 2) to develop human (companion animal) vaccines and use them widely for both clinical and herd effect protection against infection.
