Stereotype Threat
Identify the problem or problems posed in the above case study
The student has a stereotype problem where she attributes all the things to her Asian identity. The stereotype threat is deep-rooted in the mind of the girl to the extent that she cannot think without attributing her problems to her Asian identity. The stereotype is a mental picture represented in an oversimplified, and prejudiced manner and prevents individuals from looking at the problems from a holistic approach (Grossman, Kim, Tan, & Ford, 2008). From the above case studies, the girl has a problem adapting to the new people and culture but live in denial. Everything that she sees, she sees it from her ethnicity. It is not her alone that has a stereotype problem, but there are also others who refer to her from her physical appearance. For instance, there is a girl that refers to her as a Chinese, yet she comes from Korea.
The stock of Varying Perspectives
The teacher innocently says that she might be having a problem comprehending concepts because she is a foreign student, but she interprets everything based on her cultural identity. She believes that the teacher is not committed to assisting her.
Possible Challenges and Opportunities
One of the major challenges associated with stereotypes is that people do not get the opportunity to understand one another properly. Most often, people wrongfully change others without taking time to understand a person. There is still an opportunity for those willing to overcome the existing cultural differences and embrace cultural diversity.
Equitable Outcomes
The teachers should introduce and encourage cultural events as one way of promoting cultural diversity
Brainstorm immediate-term responses
The teachers should sit down the affected individual and explain to her more about cultural diversity and the need to accept and be proud of her cultural identity.
Long term policy and adjustments
The equitable outcomes would be coming up with stringent laws on racism as one way of discouraging individuals from looking at others based on their ethnic background.
Plan action
The problem is with the student because of the threat of stereotype. There are many Americans of color, especially African Americans, and they are proud of their identity.
