There is some degree of ambiguity in service delivery in nursing as a profession. This has been triggered by various factors that play a critical role in service delivery. The complexity of the healthcare systems, long working hours, shortage of resources, patients’ expectations, cultural constraints, bad hospital management, acute illnesses, and stress-related complications are some of the challenges faced by nurses. In my opinion, these hurdles can be easily be overcome if proper measures are put in place. This paper will explore in-depth the challenges facing nurses.
I believe that the relationship between the healthcare provider and patient may affect the outcome of the service being offered. If a nurse is unable to comprehend what the patient is describing due to linguistic barriers, one may unknowingly give a wrong prescription to the patient. Various cultural practices may also affect proper service delivery. A nurse may recommend a procedure that is against the patient’s culture or religion, but it may be foregone because it is a violation of their belief. Such recommendations may include abortions, surgeries, or diet changes. This can be demoralizing to nurses.
Nurses make up a substantial portion of the health labor force. It is a demanding job, and a lot is expected of them. I find that it is quite a concerning that most nurses work under stressful conditions. Understaffing in hospitals makes nurses have to work for longer hours to meet patient demands. Some are underpaid and find their job unsatisfying. They also get exposed to increased work-stress levels, and it ends up affecting their health. I find it interesting that nurses are exposed to a unique safety challenge. Handling of emergency and critical patients and the safety of needles are crucial to prevent injuries. Administrators should make an effort to create work-friendly environments.
