Gun Control and Politics
The need to regulate the ownership of guns in America has always sparked a heated debate. The essence is that most gun owners argue that they carry guns for their safety and that it is their human right as enshrined in the constitution. There are no clear laws and policies that define ownership of firearms in America and the safety of other people, especially in public. Lack of clearly defined regulations on restrictions of gun ownership has, therefore, continued to witness increased shooting that has seen a loss of lives or fatal injuries to the victims as the case of McDonald’s restaurant in Oklahoma.
The recent shooting of a fast-food worker in McDonald’s restaurant is among the many cases that have been linked to allowing people to carry guns in public without restricting the extent of having a firearm in a public place. When it comes to matters of gun ownership, it becomes politically divisive. The issue has always spurred debates in congress and state legislatures on the need to limit access to guns. The majority of the Democrats feel that there is a need to restrict access to firearms, something which only a few of the ruling party the Republicans agree. Upon being asked to leave the restaurant because of the Coronavirus restrictions, she re-enters the restaurant and fires at the people ((Razek et al. par.3)). This comes back to the continued push for the need to check on the mental assessment of a gun buyer. It equally calls for background checks on the sale of guns privately, and in gun shows shops. Republican’s argument on gun ownership that it is American peoples’ right to own a weapon further divides the effort to control gun ownership. Even the law enforcers have little to do because people walk around with guns like toys in the name of protection. Unless a stricter a tougher measures are put in place, cases like this of McDonald’s restaurant will continue to be seen, and people will continue losing lives unnecessarily.
