Introduction

The Wembley stadium is a football (soccer) pitch that is home to the English national team and is owned by the English Football Association. The construction of the state of –the art pitch was surrounded by controversies that resulted from failed management and improper planning. Also, the Football Association was unable to identify and solve problems proactively. Consequently, there was an unprecedented increase in the cost of the project due to undervaluation and inaccurate projections. Analyzing the Wembley Project elaborates on poor planning, ineffective communication, and procurement as factors that affect project execution.

Firstly, the Wembley project was poorly planned and organized. Initially, the Wembley stadium was to incorporate athletics, football, and rugby games. However, due to technical and commercial problems, athletics had to be scrubbed off from the plan (Design Build Network, n .d). The inconsistencies in executing the project indicated a failure of the management to develop a reliable system that would see the project through to the conclusion.

Moreover, the project was marred with procurement issues, further complicating its actualization. The Wembley National Stadium Limited (WSNL) and the F.A failed to set out a formal procurement process leading to severe flaws in procurement policies (Chaudhary, 2001). The Public accounts committee concluded that there was a violation of best procurement practices. Design problems arose during the implementation stage of the project. It later emerged that the design for Wembley steelwork was not consistent and had errors that required adjustments for the project to be operative. The faulty design exposed the management’s failure to execute high profile projects.

 

 

Conclusion

            Examining the Wembley Stadium project expounds on potential challenges expected in any project. Stakeholders in the project failed to effectively plan, communicate, and ultimately execute the project within the required budget and timeframe.
