- Does Yunior love his father? Does his father love him?
Yunior does not love his father. This is evident in the manner in which he expresses how his father usually referred to him. For instance, his father has ever told him that he looked horrible. This shows that he does not have a soft spot for his father. On the other hand, it is noted that his father does not love him. This can be supported by the comments by Yunior’s teacher, who refers to him as a torturer. Apart from that, it is noted that his father does not give attention to him. Besides, this father only shows some care when they are alone probably when they are on a trip.
- How do you interpret the last line of the story? What is the deeper meaning?
The last line of the story shows that the parents were aware of the environment. The deeper meaning is that they knew that they were under the watch of their kids.
3) What is the effect of using Spanish in the story? What does it add?
The effect of using Spanish is to avoid misinterpretation. In this case, the narrator uses Spanish to ensure that he puts things the way in which they were said. This is because some phrases in Spanish, when translated in English, may lose meaning. Therefore, the use of Spanish ensures that the initial meaning is kept, thus adding the value of originality.
4) What do you make of the mother’s religious leanings, habits, and rituals?
The mother was a very religious person and wanted her kids to heed to religious morals. Her habits along with rituals were meant to ensure that there is peace in the home despite the father being harsh and hard on the kids.
5) Is the father a bad person? Is there anything sympathetic about him?
Yes. The father is a bad person. This is because he does not give positive compliments to his son Yunior. He is known to be so harsh on his kids. For instance, it is known that he has a habit of raising voice to his kids. Given that he is a bad person, there is nothing sympathetic about him.
Reading response for Zombies
- In “Our Zombies, Ourselves” Parker writes, zombies are more popular than vampires, why is this?
The zombies are more popular than vampires and this is based on the fact that they have been long in existence for several decades now. Apart from that, the author also indicates that the zombies are old reliable, and this is an aspect that also makes them be regarded as popular when compared to vampires. Last but not least, the other reason as to why zombies are popular than vampires is because they are featured in bookstores, videos shows, and also in novels.
- Parker’s thesis appears at the end of the essay, what is his thesis and how do you interrupt its meaning?
The thesis by Parker is why we can’t get the undead off our brains. The interpretation of this is that people tend to have an attachment to those people that they have ever had an encounter with.
- In “My Zombie…” Klosterman quotes Alice Gregory stating “Opening Safari is an actively destructive decision. I am asking that consciousness be taken away from me” What is Safari, and what does she mean?
Safari, in this context means real-life experience, which is occasioned by zombies and vampires, thus making it not a desirable experience.
4) At the end of Klosterman’s essay he writes “This is the zombies’ world, and we just live in it. But we can live better.” What does Klosterman mean?
Klosterman means that the world is full of some undesirable traits like zombies and vampires. However, life would have been better in the world if there was the absence of these deadly creatures.
