Bereavement During childhood and Adolescence
This article chapter 5 provides an analysis of how children react when they have lost a family member, especially during their childhood and adolescence stage. The reactions of children in the latter two stages of life are unique compared to their other stages of growth and development. There are several areas chapter 5 focuses on; development considerations, methodological factors, the impacts of childhood bereavement, the grieving process among children, factors affecting such bereaving process and their outcomes and intervention strategies in such situations where children are in mourning (Osterweis, Solomon, & Green, 2020).
This research study is very important in analyzing why children in childhood and adolescent react differently when they have lost a close family member. Children are mainly susceptible to psychological issues when they lose a close family member of their fellow siblings in a family. It is a problem that many children undergo, but people do not understand. The research paper is important to the reader through as it outlines the various factors involved in the process of bereavement among children and adolescents.
The main problem that this work attempts to solve to change the perception people have towards children who are bereaving. In addition, the survivors tend to exacerbate children and adolescent bereavement process since they are also in the same situation of mourning and cannot provide the required comfort and support needed for the children. The scope of this research is based on children and adolescents who show different reactions when they are bereaved. The researchers suggest that children need to be given the emotional and intellectual support as well as opportunities to ask queries about the person who has died in a family. However, children bereavement reactions in what manner should be expected and seen as normal.
The research used a systematic literature review evidence methodology. This method involves the analysis and examination of previous research studies, articles, books, journals, and electronic sources related to the research problem. The review of previous literature involves the analysis of both qualitative and quantitative previous published literature works.
The implications of this research focusing on the call for further research on answered questions on the issue of children’s reactions towards the loss of close family members. Such issues that call for further research include what are the signs and symptoms of pathologic versus normal grief after parental or sibling death, among others (Osterweis, Solomon & Green, 2020). Besides, from the research, it is clear that we should see children bereavement as a normal process and support them in such situations.
