The company used Six Sigma to reduce the rejection of recirculating air fans during functional tests after experiencing 18 fan failures in two years. Through Six Sigma, it managed to scrutinize data from the fan removals and establish the possible root causes of fan failure and developed a solution to the problem.

The causes that the company considered to undertake Six Sigma initiative were the rejections of fans during functional tests in aircraft production, which resulted in expensive removal, extra testing, and replacement of non-operational parts. The company had experienced a total of 18 fan failures in just two years. Therefore, it was determined to establish the root causes of fan rejections to come up with a possible solution that would help in reducing expenses and ensuring quality.

The positive results caused by the implementation of Six Sigma improvement processes encompass improved company relationship with clients, improved parts and processes as well as the development of the corrective measure.

The problem associated with attempting to implement Six Sigma within the organization was employee incompetency since the company’s employees had no knowledge and skills required in implementing Six Sigma. Hence, they had to be trained for them to understand and play their parts in Six Sigma implementation.

Six Sigma is an important area of quality management because it enables companies to design, create, and deliver perfect products by minimizing defects and variations and enhancing quality, which results in relative cost saving. Through Six Sigma, the management can improve manufacturing and business process controls through establishing the root causes of a problem and then developing a corrective action for the challenge.
