CHILD PROTECTION SOCIAL WORKER CASE STUDY
As a child protection social worker, I would handle a case of child abuse by first investigating the allegations. Investigation will be done by interviewing the referring party, the alleged child, or the parents or guardians of the child. Visiting the child from home or school and spending time with them can also help gather evidence about abuse. Conducting investigations is crucial for because a social worker is able to gather evidence that will substantiate or dismiss the claims. If the allegations of the child abuse are dismissed by lack of evidence or other factors, a as a child protection social worker, I may offer the parents or guardians extra support or help to take care of the child.
If evidence proves that the child is being abused, a child protection social worker will petition a judge who will issue an order of removal or a Care Order so that the child can be taken to safety. The decision to take the child into a safe shelter is reached if the amount of risk to the child is high or if the child is in immediate danger. Safe shelters which the child could be taken to include children homes, caring relatives and family friends, community centers, and after-school programs. However, the child’s extended family or family friends can be a best alternative because the child can feel at home. Again, as a social work, I can offer counselling to both the child and the parents or guardians.
In case I would know that I would be threatened by the parents or guardians of the abused child, I would definitely change the way I handle the situation. Involving the police would be the best alternative so that peace and order is maintained during the process. I would also try to work with the whole family and the community so as to help address the issue effectively. Being sensitive to the family and the community is crucial to help the child understand and cope with the abuse as well as help amend the adult behavior. Hostile parents need to be handled gently by ensuring that I explain the dangers of child abuse, the legal and moral consequences, and the importance of the intervention. By approaching the issue with caution and gentleness and involving law enforcement, the issue can be addressed effectively.
