Critical and creative thinking
Living in a community where theft and felony is not something new, a situation like this one puts me on high alert. In this situation, where a man is approaching me with his hands in his pocket, I am most likely to perceive that the man is an offender. I am often used to hearing many offender cases happening in parking lots, so i was already predicting what was going to happen next. However, I would have also considered that the man had his hands in the pocket because it was a chilly day, but our neighbourhood’s reputation does not allow me to think in that perspective. In situations like this, it’s never the wise thing to assume that the stranger who is approaching needs help from you. Instead of finding a way out of an escape route is always wise.
A critical argument that supports one side of the issue is if the state implemented the Three strike law, the offenders would be locked up in jail for life after committing their third felony. The situation could be better if the person who robbed had a history of two more offences because that would guarantee life imprisonment. It merely means that I would not have to worry about any injustice because the offender earned himself life imprisonment, so it is actually good if the crime happened in a state which implements the three-strikes law. It could also be better because that means the three-strike law, would help in shaping up the offenders, due to the fear of being locked up for life after committing their third felony
A creative thinking argument about supporting the other side of the issue would be asking myself why the judicial system has to wait for the offender to commit multiple crimes, in order to take drastic measures on them. That literally means that offenders have a right to commit felony two times before things get serious for them. Also, the three-strike law will not work in situations where a life is lost. However, i also think that the judicial system should come up with better drastic measures for the offenders other than life imprisonment, due to the overpopulation in jails.
The rationale for this argument is that after the offenders commit a third felony, they go off to jail for life, which gets them off the streets forever. That would mean that you wouldn’t have to worry about pending justice or being robbed again later. It also means that people are safer, and their belongings will not easily get stolen again. The entire community would be at peace, knowing that they took one criminal or two off the streets. It is also an excellent public policy because that means that most frequent offenders will refrain from stealing from residents and the community at large. The other part is that the judicial system waits for offenders to commit more crimes. It puts the life of community people in danger, knowing clearly that offenders commit crimes multiple times. Judicial system should find a better way to deal with offenders before they get to three crimes.
