To all those who are fresh from high school and are looking forward to joining the University, of course, that is if you excelled in class. Before you are overexcited on the prospects of joining the University, here are a few things you need to know. These are things you need to watch out for on campus. Your expectations may not always meet reality. This is generally the case in life.

Before i joined campus, I had interacted with lots of people from University. Most of them were my peers. They made school seem to be all fun and games. Campus, through their eyes, appeared to be a place with unlimited fun and unlimited freedom. There would be room to do anything and everything from attending lectures at your discretion to going on road trips when you need a change of scenery. Watching movies and especially when they premiered, was on top of the list. Then there is the freedom to be your boss, to manage your finances and to make new friends. Besides, lucky candidates would get a higher education loan.

All these are things that the average secondary school certificate holder finds thrilling. And I was no exception.

On-campus, there is not much reading, so they said. You only read when the exams are around the corner. Unfortunately, this is not the truth of the matter. Over time I have had to study for hours on end to grasp a single concept. In worst cases, you may have to burn the midnight oil to achieve the same effect. All this is true, of course, if you want to come out of campus with good grades. You will realize that you have to work smart to avoid re-taking units you performed poorly. The flipside of this is that you may end up having a lot of time in your hands if your goal is not getting good grades.

Sooner or later, after you run out of money, then comes depression. And unfortunately, when it rains, it surely pours. You will have to endure a heartbreak or harbour the feelings of betrayal at some point. You may have to go to bed on an empty stomach or try some business with the hopes of making money and fail. It will not take you long to realize that most of the stories about campus are not real and that nobody ever tells you that school is not always fun and games. If you are lucky, you will learn this the easy way. You will also learn that the money you have has to used moderately lest you go to bed on an empty stomach. You will also learn that in as much as lecturers are not interested in your class attendance, it is a crucial determinant of whether or not you will sit an exam. And lastly, you will realize that all the time in your hands depending on how you use it you could be making your future brighter or dull each day. The bottom line is that campus is not always about fun and games it goes beyond all these and the quality time you spend in doing constructive things matters most as you get ready to go out to the world to practice what you will be learning in the four years. However, you don’t have to be the dull boy who does to much work with no play. Sometimes you can get a deserved break from your daily routine and have fun and relax provided you do that moderately. #nowyouknow
