Ed-Sheeran then narrates of the events mostly the rich and famous engage in during the weekends, ‘Lamborghinis and their rented Hummers, the party’s on, so they’re heading downtown’. The couples despite being in this world they still trying to figure out. Analysis
Khalid and Ed-Sheeran in beautiful people critic and mock the rich, famous and powerful. They discredit the myth of having the fancy and high glamor to be the source of joy. For instance, they redefine happiness when they presumably through the couples do not feel compelled to fit in in this world, they feel they are strangers in. Ed-Sheeran and Khalid feel the world culture and definition is majorly based on the stereotype of being rich, famous and beautiful as determined by the pictures of LA. In the song, the two singers are seen in the front row of the fashion show event in LA, a clear stereotype that the rich draw their happiness from such events. The life of the ordinary couple is seemingly the contrast of the life of the rich, famous and beautiful people. Similarly, Ovid takes a similar approach to discredit other myths and comparing seemingly unlike things. Ovid expresses his desire to redefine Love and sex in the social setting. The stereotypes compel him to air out his views on matters love. He seemingly achieves this by through setting up jokes and comparison to critic the stupid wraths and decision made by the gods.
The song Beautiful people has the truth value of remaining true to yourself even when one feels he/she is an outsider. Despite, the couple in the music video feeling they are outsiders in the world full of high glamour and beautiful people, they approach everything with caution in the quest of trying not to lose themselves while trying to figure out the world of the rich. Comparing the state of these two worlds, to the classical myth, the beautiful People in the music video will represent the messages championed by Dionysus while the two couples portray the messages of Apollo. The messages conveyed by Apollo where the message of clarity and prophecy. The couples in the music video demonstrates the state of clarity of mind, for they cautious not lose themselves while trying to finger out the world of beautiful people. Furthermore, the world of the beautiful people as portrayed in the music video is a world full of ecstasy and confusion. They world of beautiful people represents the message conveyed by Dionysus the god of ecstasy, confusion and mountainsides. The two worlds are contradictory to one another just like the myths of Dionysus and Apollo, who seemingly remained true to their course. The couples remain true to themselves, while finding joy in each other’s company despite the confusion and the high glamour in the world of the beautiful people. The message conveyed by Ed-Sheeran and Khalid is that the sources of our knowledge in regards to happiness is flawed as they state true happiness is not necessarily from the wealth and social thrills but remaining true and genuine to one’s self.
While Ovid uses satire and comedy to critic the social and political myths, Ed-Sheeran and Khalid employs irony to help in dismantle social myths. Both Ovid and the song Beautiful People are smart in mocking the things that other people agree mocking needs to be done to achieve the main objective of dismantling or discrediting the fallacious myths. However, beautiful people by Ed-Sheeran and Khalid calls for attentions to addressing issues of finding yourself and remaining true to that form.
