Family-Centered Care
Family-centered care presents the integration of family in the care process of a patient. The opinions and involvement of the family often guide the patient. The philosophy of this patient care is composed of four main concepts including dignity and respect which involves actively listening to the family members and the patient and using the knowledge about the beliefs values and the cultural background to guide the care delivery and the required plans (Park et al., 2018). The sharing of information is critical. It involves the provision of unbiased and complete information promptly to families and patients, allowing them to play an active role in decision-making and care (Park et al., 2018). Participation involves support and encouragement for families and patients in the care and process of decision making at a level that they can make proper decisions. Collaboration with the family is also essential. This is where the families and patients are allowed to work with healthcare leaders to ensure the development and the implementation of different programs that provide the delivery of care (Park et al., 2018).
Nurses can build proper relationships with families and patients. The role of nurses is to collaborate with nurses through finding different opportunities to improve the delivery of care and empower families and patients in active participation in the plans of care (Park et al., 2018). They are also able to fill an essential role in training family members on caring for the patient in making the transition from hospital to home (Park et al., 2018). Through the development of family-centered relationships with patients, nurses can earn the trust of patients while respecting the role of the family as an essential support system for the patient (Park et al., 2018). Families can guide the patient, and they are partners that can come together with nurses to meet the needs of the patient and improve healthcare outcomes (Park et al., 2018).
