Dear School Board Members,
I am a student at Pittsburgh public school and am writing to you regarding the importance of promoting physical education at Pittsburgh public school. Physical education is an important course that can upsurge student’s physical health and also improve their cognitive functions, learning and academic achievements.
Most students in every grade level are struggling in class not because they are not smart or because they are underachievers but because they lack an adequate amount of physical activities in their daily routines. Lack of physical activity among teenagers is also known to increase the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many other disorders. By promoting physical education, the board will be helping the students to establish life –long healthy behaviours patterns which can improve their brain development, their general wellbeing and more importantly, their academic performance.
Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that “physical activity can have an impact on cognitive skills and attitudes and academic behaviour, all of which are important components of improved academic performance. These include enhanced concentration and attention as well as improved classroom behaviour.|” (Seibert, 2018).
I am aware that Pittsburgh public school has a physical education course, but many classes are actively reducing PE time to make way for what is deemed as more important subjects. However, for us to continue excelling academically, we need to incorporate physical education into our system effectively.
Sincere regards,
