the functionalism perspective in viewing work and economy
Steven (2017) examines the functionalism perspective in viewing work and economy. In his discussion, Steven states that functionalism approach serves to show how different institutions and personalities in a society work in shaping society. Among all the three main criteria, I love this approach because it presents a positive way of viewing both the economy and work. In this approach, Steven (2017) states that the role of an economy is to provide services and goods that are crucial within the economy. Because of its role in delivering goods, the economy enables the existence of a society. Work provides income to the community because it is through work that society gets clothing, shelter, food, and other necessities in life.
The functionalism approach defines work as having numerous benefits independent of the economic considerations within the economy. As Steven, (2017) states, work provides identity to society. Most people in the community are identified by their jobs, so a job is not just a source of income, but also their identity in society. At some stage of life, people are recognized through their careers.
In functionalism, work provides self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-fulfillment among the workers. Steven (2017) shows that, by enjoying our jobs, we are building our esteem, confidence, and fulfillment in society. When people achieve these three factors, they create a strong economy through their work.
The work environment provides friendship through positive interaction, as stated in Steven, (2017). By creating good relationships with coworkers, people develop strong bonds that extend beyond the work environment. By providing people with avenues to build new relationships in life, work helps in the development of society. The approach of functionalism is thus very significant in explaining the relationships between work and economy within the community.
