University education
I agree with you that university education should be something that propels learners and not just possessed. Unfortunately, we both know that is not correct since the learning system has changed completely. Unlike in the past, when university graduates were a “sure deal” in the job market today, many graduates are half baked. This can be blamed on issues like the fact that universities are imparting more theory among students than practical. Technical courses that require the teacher’s demonstration are taught in theory like David Brooks puts it in his article “The Practical University.” However, we must agree that Universities are not just about learning science and mathematical concepts. This brings the issue of liberal arts in colleges. We have seen many professionals graduating with excellent grades in their careers but who cannot fit in society. Learning in colleges is about expanding an individual’s thinking capacity and making them more enlightened in life. The study of liberal arts aims to help individuals to coexist in society, learn how to solve problems, relate with peers, and even think their way out of issues outside the educational field. I, therefore, agree with you that learning should not just be something we possess but something that propels and that college learning is not about passing exams only but also knowing how to live with the outside world.
