1.0 Introduction

Decision making is one of the key aspects in all life activities, and in most instances, it is used in evaluating the entity’s impact and outcome (Silvius et al., 2017). Wen, Qiang, and Gloor  (2018) postulate that there are different types of decision making, namely, business, personal, and consumer decision making. The decision-maker can make a specific choice through the establishment of the context at hand; thus improving the Decision-making processes by realizing the category where the decision lies among the three types. By reflecting the world of business, organizations are on the verge of incorporating various measures to enhance their competitive advantage. In project management, Decision making is usually one of the key factors that help organizational projects shoot to the next level (Wen, Qiang, & Gloor, 2018). Therefore, that has motivated the decision that modern project management offer in their specific environments that requires flexibility, complexity, and subjectivity of the decision-makers. In such a situation, whether an organization is a public or private entity, there has to be a series of Decision-making processes in every project that they launch. Samset and Volden (2016) postulate that such projects can involve activities such as bid evaluation, resource allocation, vendor allocation, or assigning project manager. Hence, the decision in such a situation needs to be managed appropriately and effectively since it also directly affects time and resources (Galli, 2018). Therefore, the report’s objective is to evaluate the decision-making and analysis that Wanda Group assimilated while incorporating Legendary Pictures in their organization. Through the report, the use of SWOT analysis will help in evaluating the factors that Wanda Group will need to use for the successful assimilation of the Legendary Pictures.

The renowned sub-companies associated with the Group include Hoyts Group and the Wanda Cinema as well, it holds the majority shares at the AMC Theatres. In 2016, the organization signed a deal worth $3.5 billion in its acquisition of Legendary Pictures Entertainment (Birke, 2016). The agreement between the two groups came as a surprise since Legendary Pictures is known as a global blockbuster when it comes to the big-budget movie studio. Some of its renowned movies include Jurassic World and Godzilla, making the largest entertainment company operate under Chinese companies across the border. In their estimation, Dalian Wanda Group viewed the acquisition as an avenue to globally raise its revenue in the film industry. Hence, through the collaboration of the two companies, there must have followed a process of critical decision-making, which led to the signing of the deal that might be beneficial not only to the organizations but also to China.

1.3.1 Factors influencing decision making

In decision making, several factors have a hand  in influencing the decision processes, as indicated below:

1.3.1.1 Cognitive Biases

Cognitive biases can be defined as patterns where decision making looks more on generalization and observations. According to Doskey and Barry (2018), this kind of thinking may lead to many inaccurate judgments, faulty logic, and memory errors since it also links with past experiences. In most decision making that relies on cognitive biases, the organizations mainly rely on the credence that links with the previous knowledge and at times with the expected observation. At such instance, uncertain information gets dismissed since the decision-maker does not focus much on the bigger picture. With those considerations, the organizations should ensure that the executed and implemented decisions reflect the organization’s performance and strategies for success purposes.

1.3.3 Decision-makers

Decision-makers in organizations differ depending on whether the organizations are public or private entities (Wen, Qiang, & Gloor, 2018). For the public corporations, the main stakeholders include buyers and sellers who then selects the executive board members whose work is in representing the stakeholders in decision making. Consecutively, also the board usually engages in appointing their representatives, such as the Chairman or the CEO. For instance, Wanda Group appointed  Wang Jianlin as their Chairman and whose representation can be felt often while Thomas Tull governed legendary Pictures as their Chief Executive Officer (Birke, 2016). As well, in some instances, López et al. (2018) postulate that after the executive board has finalized, the stakeholders usually approve the already made decisions. On the other hand, for one to be a decision-maker in a private entity, it may range from sole proprietor, partnership, and the limited liability type of ownership (Wen, Qiang, & Gloor, 2018). Wanda Group dares to be innovative in all circumstances such that its stakeholders are willing to take risks regarding the expansion of the organization’s territories. For instance, it is the only company in China that has risked tackling big organization entertainment companies in the United States to acquire them the recent being Legendary Pictures. With that regard, it has become the biggest cultural industry in China, making it a cultural enterprise.

2.1.2 Excellence Commitment

The Group’s yearns to excel in all their endeavors, and this can be seen in their decision to incorporate financial, cultural, and commercial properties such as hotels to ensure that they maintain their competitive advantage. For instance, despite the flopping of their first trial in engaging AMC Entertainment, a United States entertainment company, they went ahead for the second trial with the Legendary Pictures. Since it seems that the decision is still not working at its best, it’s predictable that they might poach another renowned global entertainment company to fulfill their desire to excel.

3.1 Know it all

Therefore it would be essential for organizations to brainstorm and evaluate the situation before implementing them. For instance, Wanda Group should have ensured that all its stakeholders had a hand in determining the effectiveness of incorporating Legendary Pictures in terms of both long and short profit that it would bring to them.

3.2 Blinders

In most instances, the organizations fail when they overlook some red flags while making decisions. In such situations, one will find out that they are various realities that will sooner or later limit their success that could have been tackled at the problem identification stage.  In the case of Wanda Group’s acquisition of Legendary pictures, there seems to have been a blinder that was ignored by both companies that ended up to immense loss that even made Thomas Tull exit one year after its acquisition.

3.3 Hip shooter

Most individuals and organizations are always in the run of implementing a decision before questioning its course. Therefore, many knees- jerking decisions are reached through assumptions rather than tested facts leading to the downfall of many companies. For instance, if Thomas Tull had questioned the collaboration with the Wanda Group before signing any deal, then it would have noted the downfall of a company like AMC Entertainment, thus making a merited decision of facts and possibilities. Therefore, organizations should always evaluate past experiences before indulging in any decision to avoid flawed decision making.

Every individual or an organization that needs to boost their success should ensure that they make sound and strategic decisions. In all instances, they should ensure that they consult and follow the right decision-making procedures before implementing them. The decision-makers may also carry up a follow up through questioning the viability of various decisions to enable them to probe the effectiveness of the decision, thus improving their decision making processes. With that regard, they will be in a position to evaluate what to do and what not to during and after decision making, thus improving their competitive advantage in the global market.
