OVERALL EFFECT OF COVID-19
Instructions The first part of your final exam was the oral history presentation. The second part is this current events section. We are currently in the midst of a world wide pandemic which is causing disruption of every part of the nations of the world, socially, economically, culturally, academically……it has caused disruption and, for those who have lost loved ones, extreme pain. In our country, we are dealing with tens of thousands of deaths, a lack of testing to identify the overall effect of COVID-19, not enough equipment to protect our healthcare workers and civic employees and a complete change in our daily lives. For the current event final, I would like you to think of yourself as a historian, writing a story that will tell people 50 years from now about an aspect of the pandemic. You will find one article from a reputable online news source (New York Times, Washington Post or Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times) which reports an aspect of the pandemic. You can choose this from the perspective of your major field of study, or from current interest: Social: a report about how people are dealing with the crisis, or how it has effected families, inability to meet with friends or Economic: a report about unemployment or how it has impacted one particular area (restaurants, sports, grocery stores, health services, etc) or Medical: How are our healthcare professionals dealing with this? How has it impacted their lives, health, families? or Academic: How are elementary schools or high schools or colleges/universities addressing the changes required by the pandemic? Are there any long range opinions about You will read through the article and then respond with the standard journalistic questions: Who: who does the article discuss, group or individual? What: What is the main point of the article? Where did this take place? Why: why did this happen? why is it important? When: you can use this to identify the period of time addressed in the article How: how does the author present his/her writing – sympathy? anger? hopeful? …..? You will use these questions as a guide to writing your story, it should be at least one page long & not longer than two (double spaced, 12 font). At the end of your ″reporting″ you will include the website, the author of the article and the date you accessed it.
