The Monkey garden

The Monkey garden represents Esperanza’s childhood. It represents a place where children would play away from their parents’ interference. In the garden, kids are able to play and engage in activities, including the horrors of adulthood and which went unnoticed by their mothers. The monkey garden was the only place where Esperanza would go to in order to avoid the adult world around her. Esperanza represents a group of people who dislike the responsibilities that are associated with adulthood. However, the monkey garden is no longer Esperanza after she realizes that she could not remain a child forever. The feeling that she cannot remain in the garden makes Esperanza feel lonely and alienated. The feeling comes after Esperanza sees Sally engage in some game with some boys, which ends up with Sally giving away her innocence to the boys. Esperanza loses her innocence in the monkey garden to symbolize that she lost her virginity during her childhood
