I Will Find the Truth.
BRIAN WILLIAMS HOUSE
ANITA, (A middle aged woman, looking everywhere in her room. she can’t seem to find what she has been looking for, murmuring to herself) Being a new CEO with absolutely no experience is very hard. It all came too quickly. This is not what I signed for by getting married to Brian Keith Williams. I was promised a beautiful life, everything I ever wanted, and yes, that was given to me for the past eight years, up until last month when my life turned into a nightmare (She sobs painfully, then she is interrupted).
RITA, (A young girl. Running into her mother’s room) Mummy, Mummy! I can find the other shoe; Katy has three shoes. She says all of them her hers. I am sure she stole mine. Come, help me talk to her. (pulling her mother outside the room)
ANITA, (Smiling at Rita) Hey baby girl, mummy has to get ready. Why don’t you go and politely talk to your elder sister? I am sure she will give you the shoe. Let her know mummy says so; I am sure she will cooperate. (Turning back to her mirror).
Anita is left thinking to herself. Her pretty face has turned into a sad one. She is continuously tired because of all that she has to do. The quest to find the killer of her husband has become her driving force for the last month. She lives for the day she will kill the murderer. Vengeance has become her everyday quest.
ANITA, (wiping off the tears on her chicks and grabbing her handbag) Katy! Rita! Let’s go. We will be late for school kids. Get out. Come on!
RITA, (crying) Mummy! It’s Katy again. She has refused to come. She is crying while calling papa’s name. Come, tell her that daddy will come back tomorrow. Right mummy?
ANITA, (squatting to level with her four years old daughter) Baby girl, why don’t you tell uncle Ben to warm up the car. I am on my way with Katy. Go, sweetie; we will be right behind you.
RITA, (running down the stairs) Okay mummy, deal with your cry baby. As for me, I am a big girl. That’s why daddy will come and take me with him next time! (Running down stairs)
ANITA, (thinking to herself- for how long will I keep lying to the girls. I will have to find a way to tell them the truth. Katy is 9 years, and she has already started behaving like she knows the truth. For now, I’ll focus on letting her know that school is important. Later, maybe their grandma can help me out.) Katy! My cute baby. Let’s go to school beautiful; it’s essential you become a doctor. Right? (she yells as she walks toward her daughters’ room)
KATY, (crying) Mummy, I do not want to go to school. Other children keep telling me that they saw the news that my daddy is dead. I know it’s the truth mummy. I know he will not come back. And I do not want to be a doctor anymore. I wanted to be a doctor for him. He will not see me become one. Mummy, I want to know who killed daddy? The people in TV said he was dead.
ANITA, (holding back tears) Come on, baby, we have to be strong for Rita. It’s true they that daddy won’t come back, but do you want to make mummy sad?
KATY, (getting up) mummy, I swear I will do anything. I am going to school. Will hold Rita’s hand while crossing the road; I will protect her. Do not be sad please.
ANITA, (smiling) That’s my girl! Protect your sister at all costs baby. It’s only the three of us. Do not let her know the truth. We will tell her when she grows up. Okay? (hugs her smiling daughter) I love you, baby.
KATY, I love you too Mummy. Let’s go now. Rita and uncle Ben will be waiting.
Both mother and child walk downstairs and outside the house, get into the car and drive out of the compound.
WILLIAMS COMPANY BUILDING
Anita is on her way into the Williams company building. All she can think of is the meeting with the engineer and the technician in the evening. Today she will find out the truth. She is sure the killer is in the company. No one would make life so hard for her except a person after the company. All the same, today she will know the truth.
RITA, (muttering to herself with so much hate) I will find out the truth. and when I finally do, nothing will stop me from killing that idiot. (She is startled by the sound of the opening of the door to her office)
JANE (her secretary), Madam, I came to tell you how your schedule will be like.
ANITA, (feigning a smile) It’s okay dear. Tell me; I hope you fixed the 4 pm meeting I told you about.
JANE, Yes, I did, madam. Here is your schedule, at 9:30 am you have a board meeting. Then your lunch break. Some papers need your signature before the meeting. At 2:00 pm you have a meeting with the human resource about the upcoming interviews. That’s all, madam.
ANITA, Thank you, Jane. You can go now. Remember my coffee please.
There is a knock at the door which startles her again, but she recollects herself before the person can enter.
BEN (Anita’s brother in law), madam CEO. I see you did not even hesitate before taking over. How are we sure you aren’t the killer? (his voice is sarcastic)
ANITA, I see you have come here to showcase your stupidity as always. You know what Benjamin; I have no time for you. In due time I will deal with you. Get out of my office! Right now! (shouting) I believe you have an office to take care of. Moreover, we have a meeting at 2 pm, I suggest you thoroughly prepare for that. (with a smile she turns back to her computer and continues typing)
BEN, I will deal with you in due time. I always knew you are cunning like all black women. I warned Brian, but he would not listen.
As he walks away, Anita is left behind, crying and cursing. She is punching her keyboard so hard and tuning the papers on her desk. She seems frustrated.
ANITA, Jane! Jane! (shouting)
JANE, (rushing into the office) Yes, madam.
ANITA, (getting her coat and handbag) I will be gone for the rest of the morning. Cancel the meetings and tell Benjamin we will meet tomorrow. I will be back at 4:00 pm.
JANE, Okay, madam.
BETTY’S HOUSE
Anita knocking at the door. She seems impatient, and she is sobbing. The door opens.
ANITA, (hugging Betty) Betty, I want to join Brian. I cannot do this anymore. I am tired. I just cannot.
BETTY (Anita’s best friend) Come in dear. What is it, again?
ANITA, Its Benjamin. Why won’t the man give me a break? Is it my fault that I am a widow? How can he keep calling me a murder? You of all people know I loved my husband. I could not kill him.
BETTY, (walking to the kitchen) Did you do what we agreed?
ANITA, Yes, dear. (taking a glass of water from betty)
BETTY, Then, you do not have to worry. If those secret cameras that your husband told you about were working, you will solve the issue today. Ben will get his answers as well as yourself. All you have to do is relax (taking a seat beside Anita). How are my beautiful goddaughters?
ANITA, Betty, that’s another issue. Katy knows the truth. I had to convince her to go to school this morning.
BETTY, do not worry dear, after you get your answers, you will have all the time in the world to explain. One step at a time darling.
ANITA, I want this to be over soon.
BETTY, so be it, darling.
Both women continue to talk.
ANITA, Betty, Betty! Wake up. I have to go. It’s almost 3:00 pm. I got to prepare and be there on time in case of traffic.
BETTY, Shoot! I forgot. Get yourself together. I will come with you. I will help pick the children from school then you can come back for them when all is well.
ANITA, (smiling) What would I do without my best friend. I am such a lucky woman.
BETTY, I am the lucky one in this case, darling.
ANITA, (as they pick their bags and keys) We are both lucky then. But I am nervous, what if it was suicide like they said?
BETTY, nonsense. The Brian I know would live if not for anything for his daughters. Besides, all was going on well for him. It cannot be the truth.
ANITA, I hope not darling. I just want answers.
Both women walk out of the house and go their separate ways to their cars.
WILLIAMS COMPANY BUILDING
ANITA, (walking past her secretary’s desk) Jane, to my office now.
JANE, (as she gets up) yes, madam.
ANITA, (sitting on her desk) I do not want any disturbances when the meeting begins. Any new developments?
JANE, (looking at her note pad) Mr. Ben was so furious after you canceled the meeting. The board members requested for a new date for the meeting, and one Mr. Andy was here to see you.
ANITA, call my brother Andy and let him know I’ll call back. As for Benjamin, I will deal with him. The date for the board meeting, will be communicated later.
Jane: Okay, madam.
ANITA’S OFFICE
At exactly 4:20 pm the door is knocked. Anita recollects herself before allowing them into the office. Two men, the technician, Mark and engineer Carlos.
CARLOS, Good day, madam.
MARK, Good day, madam.
ANITA, (standing up to shake their hands) Good day. Have a seat both of you. Thank you for coming.
CARLOS, No problem, madam. All the work is done. We found a footage that might prove that sir was killed. It will interest you.
ANITA, (folding her hands) That’s okay. Let’s get down to it. You can use my computer.
MARK, Okay. Let me just connect the flash drive.
As mark connects the drive, Anita sits there waiting for the video to start.
THE VIDEO ON THE COMPUTER.
The video starts. It’s a conversation between Ben and Brian at the parking of the building. Where her husband had been murdered, she is in shock because according to news, Benjamin was at home at the time, and she was the last person to be seen with her husband.
BEN, (laughing out loud) I though you have security. Where are they now? I will take over everything after killing you, the company, that house, that beautiful black woman, and your girls. You were always the victorious one. (takes out a gun and points at him) let’s see how you win this time. (laughs again)
BRIAN, (walking up to his brother) I am not afraid of death, brother. I pity you after this because my wife will find you and kill you. All this is mostly her sweat; I am glad I made a fortune for my kids. You can do your worst.
A gunshot follows, Brian is on the ground while Ben runs toward his car. The footage ends.
ANITA, (sobbing) what did my husband do to this idiot. I will deal with him. Now that I found the truth, he will live to remember what hurting a woman feels like. (shouting) Jane! Jane! Call that idiot Benjamin for me. I will not spare him!
