Bombs Bursting in Air
Busting Bombs in the Air by Beth Johnson is a good example exemplification essay. While reading the essay, I was impressed by a few aspects of the article. First of all, the title of the article ‘Bombs Bursting in Air’ is a metaphor. The title gives one an idea that the article pertains to wars and the United States. However, the story talks about deeper issues concerning life struggles. The author refers to the life challenge and strategies as bombs which can always strike anytime. The organization of the essay is also impressive. The author began by stating right away on her exemplification – the bombs in her life. Therefore, the readers can quickly grasp that which the article is trying to put across – and be easily convinced. Her organization also enhances concentration due to the suspense that it raises.
The author’s thesis can be traced almost at the end of the essay. This is where the author cites that; ‘bombs can blind us, like the fireworks, but if we have the courage to open our eyes to keep our eyes open and welcoming, even bombs finally fade against the vastness of the starry sky.” The author tries to tell us more about how fragile life can be as it is full of uncertainties. However, the author advises that amidst disappointing times, we must stay courageous and live to face another day. The troubles that we face are parts of life itself.
The author uses personal exemplification to display or rather to explain her point. The author gives an instance of her life that she experienced love and divorce. She remembers instances where her daughter’s friend hit her head, but the x-rays revealed that she had tumors and other bad things that have happened. The author, however, points out despite all these, she is still thankful for many things in her life.
