week’s resources and Ted talk
Having gone through this week’s resources and Ted talk, I reflected on an argument I had some time back with Jason (not his real name). I have always believed that working while studying is ideal, as I can acquire working experience, especially when the job aligns with concepts attained in class. Having an extra source of cash always comes in handy for students to be able to meet daily expenses and even lessen the financial burden of paying tuition fees. I have always believed that working part-time allows me to manage my time effectively, a characteristic that helps in prioritizing activities even when not at work. Working while studying also provides an avenue of networking and gaining crucial soft skills
.
On the other hand, Jason argued that working while studying predisposes one to stress as you try to strike a balance and lack time for your studies, especially when the work is demanding and having less time interacting and socializing with classmates. From the conversation, I wholeheartedly believe I depicted a full mode soldier mindset, as I went right after Jason, as I thought I was right. Our discussion (argument) could have gone differently if I had approached it productively as described by Julia Dhar in her Ted talk. I realize I would have employed a scout mindset and give Jason a listening ear, rather than insisting my point of view is the correct one. From the Ted talk, I have learned to engage in arguments productively and be accommodative of other people’s ideas.
