Value Clarification
Values are our perceptions and beliefs about what is essential in life; i.e., they shape our actions and behavior in different aspects of life. There are two main steps involved in value clarification which are:
- How one portraits his or her values to others.
- Listing your most essential values.
To validate the value clarification process, a list of the most important value to the less critical value should be made in the following categories; family, work, and community. The list is as shown below:
FAMILY | WORK | COMMUNITY |
Love | Leadership | Positivity |
Loyalty | Knowledge | Respect |
Forgiveness | Team work | Integrity |
Caring | Wisdom | Courage |
Honesty | Self control | Friendship |
After listing the values in their respective categories, he or she should use diagrams to indicate how fully they are living by these values in the selected categories.
- LOVE

INTERGRITY RESPECT
COURAGE FRIENDSHIP
The diagrams above simple explain the important values considering individual perceptions. The closer the value is to the circle, the more significant it is to the person. A value that is less significant to your life regarding the categories should be far away from the circle. In this case, let us explain the family category; a person may act inconsistently with his or her value. The person might break the trust and loyalty given by one of the family members, to get back in alignment with his or her benefits. The person should admit the mistake and accept the concequences of the actions, then ask for forgiveness to the person affected by his or her actions.
