The circus truly changes and exerts a powerful impact on our novel narrator, John. It has turned John into a drunkard as we see John, August, and Marlena taking alcohol in every meal. John goes into the extent of evening drinking beyond consciousness. We also see him despite his fear from the start of the book, engage and break his virginity with Barbara, which he had so much protected. The circus also brings out the charming character of John as Marena finds him irresistible. Despite the strong moral stand John had of sexually engaging with somebody’s wife, he finds Marlena’s kiss, embrace and dance irresistible. John’s caring nature continues to express in his stand with Marlena, Rosie, and other animals from mistreatment. We also see that most of these characters are based on his prayerful character. The chapters depict the horrific world inside the circus that is not habitable for both the characters and the animals. From the outside, the affairs of the circus look magnificent, beautiful, dramatic, extravagant, and exciting, but deep inside is full of pain suffering which John brings to light(Gruen, 2011).
